"Brussels might be the lowest (taxed) urban area in the county and Seaforth will likely come in as the lowest of the five towns in Huron County," said Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight at Huron East's April 3 council meeting. "The increase is sizeable but there's likely room for it," he said. Looking at the fourth draft of the Huron East budget, council dis- cussed numbers that add up to a 13 per cent increase in the levy which translates into an 11.3 per cent tax rate increase. Knight said compared to other Huron County municipalities, Brussels should improve by two or three positions and Seaforth should move to 19th position from 20th out of 26. "If you think it's bad here the county levy has gone up a lot more in the lakeshore municipalities, some by a lot more than 64 per cent," said Knight. County capping property taxes The county is looking into setting caps for property taxes on commer- cial, industrial and multi -residential classes of property after council passed a bylaw to said effect. Bill Siemon ques- tioned why his ward's policing costs have doubled when Seaforth's have gone down since amalgamation. "Why are the rural municipalities picking up the extra policing? I haven't seen a cop in a couple of years. There isn't even a donut shop in McKillop," he joked. Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan responded that the police service provided is no differ- ent in rural areas than in the urban areas. "Ninety per cent of the police reports are stolen ATVs and break- ins in rural areas," added Mayor Joe Seili. Seaforth Coun. Joe Sterner said he thinks the way Huron East divides up its policing costs is "right on." "I don't think Seaforth should pick up the total cost of policing. And, I don't think the rural areas are get- ting over -charged at all," he said. Knight said the public meeting to pass the municipal budget will be held during the next council meet- ing on April 17. CANADA'S BEST SELLING COMPACT SUVt LUST GOT BETTER.
