Van Egmond Foundation plans dinner,
fashion show to fundraise for roofs

With three buildings that need
new roofs - including at least
$30,000 for an historically accurate
roof for the main house - the Van
Egmond Foundation is holding a
few new fundraisers this year.
A roast beef supper featuring
three local all-star fiddlers will be
held Saturday, April 14 at 5:30 p.m.
at the Van Egmond House.
The fiddlers include Devon
Martene, 14, of Centralia, Ben
Brown, 16, of Dungannon and
Samuel Romijn, 15, of Goderich.
Martene is a 2006 winner of a fid-
dle contest in Blyth, Romijn is a
2005 winner of a fiddle contest in
Shelburne and Brown is the star of
two plays at the Livery in Goderich
last season.
"They'll play separately and then
at the end, they'll play a medley and
we'll raise the roof," says organizer
Gladys Van Egmond.
"These kids are exceptional and
fiddle music is always a good draw
around here," says Van Egmond
Foundation president Pat
Saundercock, who will also be cook-
ing the meal.
Organizers are hoping to raise
$600 towards the new roofs with the
dinner.
As well, a vintage fashion show
and tea will be held at the
Egmondville United Church on
June 23 featuring 50 different out-
fits from 1870 to 1940.
While close to 30 people are need-
ed to model the historic clothing,
Saundercock says organizers are
only looking for a few more models.
The fashion show will also feature
donated decorating by local flower
shops and live music in the church
sanctuary, followed by a tea in the
basement.
"We're aiming for a decent
turnout at the fashion show as well
and every little bit we get will go
towards capital projects," says
Saundercock. "We have an awfully
busy year planned."
Saundercock says the main house
will need to order cedar shakes from
British Columbia to reshingle the
roof in an historically accurate way.
As well, the carriage house and the
interpretive centre, now called the
Memorial Centre, will also need
new roofs.
She says the foundation is hoping
for another Trillium grant to fund
the roofs and an application is now
being researched.
