Vanastra ladies curlers are region four
champs after weekend tankards
Jennifer Hubbard
Eight Vanastra curlers competed
against Ontario's best during the
OCA Women's Tankard in Ajax on
Sunday.
The local team earned its spot at
the provincial bonspiel after win-
ning two games — against the Brant
and Glendale (Burlington) curling
clubs — at the regional tankard held
in Seaforth on Saturday.
Comprised of Te -Anna Cressman,
Carol Dutot, Connie Townsend,
Brenda Edgar, Kay Johns, Crystal
Van Dorp, Estella Higenell and Lori
VanDenHengel, the local team was
declared the region four champion.
"Since I've been competing we've
gone to the regional tankard at
least three times before, but we've
never moved on to the provincials,"
Johns said.
"We played well together. The ice
in Seaforth was weight and release
sensitive, so we figured that out and
used it to our advantage."
Region four includes most of
southwestern Ontario, she added.
Later that night, the team trav-
elled to Ajax for the provincial play -
downs.
Ladies' and men's teams from all
four provincial regions met at the
Annandale Curling Club for the
championships on April 1. _
And while the Vanastra curlers
lost their first game to Orangeville,
they fought back to win game two
against Cataraqui (Kingston)

For their efforts, the ladies
received the 2007 Nette Thwaite
Trophy.
And while all eight ladies play at
the Vanastra Curling Club, Johns
said the regional bonspiel was the
first time they played as one team.
"We just tried to find eight ladies
who would consider playing," she
explained.
"We like to do this (competition)
because it's a way to get more
curlers involved. We'll definitely be
trying it again next year."
The men's regional playdowns
were also held locally on March 31
at the Vanastra Curling Club.
Listowel won the title and joined
the Vanastra ladies at the provin-
cials on Sunday.
Listowel won its morning game
and lost in the afternoon to finish
the day as 'runners up' in the
Dominion Regalia.
