The Clinton school finished eighth overall, in the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) meet in Etobicoke on March 6 and 7. "Just to get there was an accomplish- ment," coach Terrie Van Osch said. "The time standards they had to meet to qualify were much faster this year because they were try- ing to cut back on numbers." Theresa Bakker fin- ished second and Scot Ferguson was third in their respective 100 - metre free style SWAD — swimmers with a dis- ability — races. Ferguson also placed fourth in the 50 -metre free style and Bakker finished sixth in the 50 -metre back stroke. St. Anne's third SWAD participant Shawn Reinink com- peted in the 50 -metre back stroke and 50 - metre free style events, finishing in eighth and llth. Dani Heinbuch swam in the junior girls' division individ- ual medley race. With all four swim- mers competing in the open division, St. Anne's collected enough points to be ranked eighth out of 80 schools. "There were more than 100 schools there, but only 80 had open swimmers... still, that is really impressive for our lit- tle school," Van Osch added. The local swimmers qualified for the provincials after finish- ing in the top five at a Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (WOSSAA) meet on Feb. 20. Thirteen other St. Anne's swimmers com- peted in the WOSSAA meet, which was origi- nally slated for Feb. 13. The school finished second overall in the open division. Heinbuch finished fourth in the 100 - metre individual med- ley race, while Ferguson, Bakker and Reinink each excelled in three events — 50 - metre free style, 50 - metre back stroke and 100 -metre free style. Ferguson finished second in all three events, Bakker record- ed three thirds and Reinink notched one fourth and two fifth place finishes. / "Everyone seemed at one point to swim a personal best time. Some kids were even swimming events that they had never swam before and did really well," Van Osch said. St. Anne's WOSSAA team also included Victoria Poelman, Julia Bakker, Loretta Steeper, Christy Hartman, Val Otten, Hailey Arts, Katherine Hogervorst, Correena Otten, Jessica Van Aaken, Amanda Wondergem, Sarah Vaessen, Kim Hogervorst and Nick Vaessen. Two of CHSS's six qualifying swimmers — Jocelyn Bartliff and Caleb Ringgenberg — were unable to attend the rescheduled WOS- SAA meet due to. prior commitments. Matt Fisher finished fifth in his 100 - metre breast stroke race. Alex Cardno swam the junior 50 -metre free style, Kody Jacobs swam the junior 50 -metre back stroke and Adam Braeker swam the senior 100 -metre breast stroke. "Alex and Kody are both new to the team and competitive swimming this year. The fact that they both made it to WOS- SAA in their first year is an accom- plishment in itself," CHSS coach Scott Middleton said. "Matt and Adam both have more time here on the team and I'm sure they'll move on to OFSAA next Jennifer Hubbard photo St. Anne's swimmers Scot Ferguson, Theresa Bakker, Dani Heinbuch and Shawn Reinink recently com- peted at the OFSAA championship meet in Etobicoke. year." With many of his swimmers planning to return next year, Middleton added the team is "looking good" for the 2007-08 season.
