Ice thickness and rain forecasts combine
to create potential for flooding, says ABCA
Jennifer Hubbard
Water levels continue to climb
across the region, but Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority
(ABCA) water and planning manag-
er Alec Scott isn't anticipating any
"serious flooding problems."
"I always hesitate to say that
we're through the worst of it," Scott
said in a March 14 interview.
"Over the next two to three
weeks, heavy rainfall could cause
problems because the ground is still
saturated, but the concerns about
melting snow are gone."
While high water events are a
concern each spring, levels of water
content measured in the snowpack
in early March were higher than
normal.
The water content of early March
snow within the watershed was 100
millimetres in the north and 75 mil-
limetres in the south, compared to
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) field staff Wayne
Drinkwalter use a cutter tube to measure snow depth and water
snowpack on Friday
Ford and Tony
content in the
an average 25 millimetres in the
previous three years.
This fact combined with last
week's warm weather forecast, rain
and thickness of ice levels, prompt-
ed Scott to issue a press release on
March 9 warning of the higher
potential for spring flooding.
"The weather can shift greatly at
this time of year, but we feel it is
important for people to be aware
that there is increased potential for
a significant flooding event when
this heavy snow melts," he said.
"If nights are cold and rain is
sparse, the high snow pack might
not be a major issue, but if we have
lots of rain and a warm spell, then
the snow could melt and run off in a
relatively short time, which could
possibly lead to flooding."
Melting last week resulted in the
removal of most of the region's snow
pack. Peak water levels - with flows
similar to normal spring break up -
were expected last
Thursday.
