"We hosted it between Seaforth and Clinton in 1990 but it was a lot of travel since most of the teams stayed in Stratford. Where do you put 45 teams in Seaforth?" says Rob Dearing, one of the organizers of the 30th provincial broomball tournament this weekend. Since the double ice pad in Stratford just opened for the first time last week, Dearing says plan- ning over the past year has been a little tense. Sports league to host provincials `It would be nice to have it in Seaforth, but we just don't have the facilities...' -- Rob Dearing, a local organizer for the provincial tournament "We've been a little worried they wouldn't be done in time but they've been really good to work with. Stratford is really excited to have a broomball tournament there - it's a pretty big event," he says. Dearing estimates that the event should bring $300,000 to $400,000 in spin-off revenue to Stratford with hotel rentals, food, gas and other expenses. "It would be nice to have it in Seaforth but we just don't have the facilities for it," he says. While five Seaforth teams are competing in the event, 45 teams (with 20 players each) are arriving from all o'fer Ontario as far away as Windsor and Ottawa to compete in six divisions including elite men's and ladies', intermediate men's and ladies', masters and co-ed. Seaforth's Parr Line, Polar Ice and Witches of Broom will be competing in the intermediate ladies' division while Seaforth's Cyclones and Snipers will be compete in the inter - BIG BROTHERS SISTERS OF ; ORTH HURON FOR KIDS' SAKE lk Where and Whew • FRIDAY, MARCH 30 Goderich Little Bowl 519-524-2895 7:00 to 9:30 pm SATURDAY, MARCH 31 - Starlight Lanes, Seaforth 519-527-1654 11:00 to 2:45 pm A nay at Wonderland Now Picks pledge sheet up at Local Bowling Lines or by contacting Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Huron 2. Qualifying teams are the top two in their league but Seaforth is bring- ing one more team as the host league. While the Cyclones have qualified to compete at the provincial level for the past three years and Parr Line and Polar Ice have also competed provincially many times, Dearing says it's hard to guess how any of the teams will do this year. "There's some pretty tough compe- tition at the provincials. We have strong teams but there are good teams all over," he says. Seaforth's juvenile teams - the Hitmen and the Assassins - will be volunteering at the tournament by working at the door and running raffles. And, any money raised from the tournament will go towards minor broomball in Seaforth. "Everyone's helped to make this work. We've got a good team of orga- nizers," he says. While he's not certain how often Seaforth might host "the provincials now that Stratford has a double ice pad, Dearing says it probably won't be another 17 years. "We'll see how this one goes. It's been a lot of work," he says. But, he adds that if this tourna- ment is successful, Seaforth Broomball may apply to host- the juvenile nationals in Stratford. Bantam girls win in Mildmay While a win in Mildmay last Wednesday bettered their chances, the Seaforth Bantam girls are still waiting to hear if they've secured a spot in the OWHA provincials. Coach Tony Arts said on Monday that league organizers are waiting to see the results of another round- robin playoff game, before the OWHA qualifying team can be announced. Kelly Consitt, Cassidy Flanagan and Katie Arts scored in the March 7 game against Mildmay that put the local team in the running for the provincials. The team ended round-robin play with two wins, one loss and two ties.
