Steckle first stepped into the
political limelight in 1970 at
the age of 28.
"That election, which
brought me to sit as an elected
representative in this very
room, gave way to a political
career spanning four decades,"
he said.
"In that time, I have been
able to affect many changes
that I am proud of. I have
worked diligently to represent
my constituents and to better
my community."
Formerly a Stanley
Township Reeve and Huron
County Warden, Steckle has
been the MP of Huron -Bruce
since 1993.
And while his last election
was the closest in his career,
Steckle said the 889 -vote win
over Conservative candidate
Ben Lobb, didn't have an
impact on his decision to
retire.
"In fact, it would have been
the reason for me to go on," he
added.
"I always love a challenge
and I never walk away from a
fight."

Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle will not be running in the next federal
election. Representing the riding since 1993, Steckle announced his
retirement on March 7 in Varna. That same day, Steckle's long-time
executive assistant Greg McClinchey said he would be seeking nomi-

sidering retirement for the
last couple of years.
"Paul's approaching his 30th
year... that's quite a long
record of public service.
There's a time to come and a
time to go, and everyone' s
entitled to make that decision
on their own terms," com-
mented Nick Whyte, president
of the Huron -Bruce Federal
Liberal Association.
And while he plans to
spend mote time with
his family, Steckle said
he will continue to be
involved with the local
Liberal association and
the next federal cam-
paign.
"I'm riding into the
sunrise... the sunset
will come later," he
explained.
"I hope to work hard
for the candidate com-
ing f bard in the next
elect -ME I will be look-
ingover this person's
shoulder and offer guid-
ance through some of
the lessons I have
learned."
McClinchey to seek
