Local man
injured in
snowmobile
crash
A 22 -year-old Huron
East man was
transported to the
Seaforth Community
Hospital with serious
non -life threatening
injuries last week,
after the snowmobile
he was driving struck a
tree.
Emergency crews
responded to the crash
on March 7 at 8:30
p.m. The 2004
Skidoo was being
operated on a sled trail
just north of Sawmill
Road west of Maple
Line in Huron East.
Huron OPP say the
driver failed to
negotiate a curve in the
trail and struck a tree.
The snow machine
burst into flames and
was destroyed.
Police are reminding
snowmobilers to be
aware of the posted
speed limits and
dangers of riding after
dark, after consuming
alcohol and off the
marked trails. They
encourage riders to
reduce speed at night
because of decreased
visibility.

Steckle
announces
retirement
Jennifer Hubbard
iniSMEEMED
Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle is
"riding off into the sunrise."
Surrounded by family, friends and
the media, Steckle announced last
week that he would not be seeking re-
election for a sixth consecutive federal
term.
"It is time for the next generation to
take over where I have left off and it is
time for me to return home to my
family; as a husband, a father and as a
grandfather," Steckle said.
The press conference was held at the
Stanley Complex in Varna — built
during Steckle's tenure as Stanley
Reeve — on March 7.
Steckle will continue on in his role as
MP until after the next election,
whenever that may be. In the mean
time, he has a number of items he'd
like to see through, including a risk
management program for Canadian
farmers, rural infrastructure funding
and the exoneration of Steven Truscott.
"I have no jurisdiction over the
matter, but the exoneration of Steven

FHT facility location still unknown

The topic of a facility for the
Huron County Family Health
Team (FHT) of Seaforth
brought all the players into
the Seaforth Community
Hospital boardroom last
Tuesday afternoon.
But, they left the
boardroom that day without
any resolution to the question
of where the FHT will reside.
Joe Seili, Huron East
Mayor and chair of the FHT
hoard, said he wants to hold a
ribbon -cutting ceremony in
three months opening the
new FHT facility. -v
But, while it was
determiined by Huron -Perth
Healthcare Alliance CEO
Andrew Williams that the
Seaforth Community Hospital
Trust is legally able to enter a
leasing agreement, the four
hospital trust members sent a
letter to Huron East council
after the Tuesday afternoon
meeting stating the trust
would not enter into a 99 -year
lease for $1 with the town.
"They say they're still
willing to negotiate to provide
space for the FHT but that's
not the direction I got from
the municipality or the FHT
board," said Seili after
receiving the letter.
He said the municipality
and the Seaforth Community
Development Trust will be
sitting down this week to talk
about building a separate
building fin- the FHT.
"Our stand is still the same.
We can't build on property we
don't own. This is the only
logical way to have control of
it," he said Wednesday.
Burgess said Thursday that
the hospital trust refused the
99 -year lease because of a
legal opinion that "it's
substantially the same as
turning over the property."
He said two suites at the
clinic could be made available
for the FHT but added that if
the municipality and
development trust decide to
build their own building for
the FHT, the current clinic - if
vacated by the town's doctors
- can be filled with other
healthcare professionals.
"It's not my decision to
build an alternate building
but I do think the current
facility will be utilized in the
future. I believe it can
continue to support the
hospital and healthcare in
this community," he said.
