Mitchell `steamed' about need for audit of Agricorp
Steckle says farmers need federal support to ensure Canadian food security
From Page 1
"We really do need a risk manage-
ment program in Ontario and we
need it now," he said.
Steckle responded by bemoaning
the fact that the federal govern-
ment has $17 billion to spend on
the military and on developing
countries but is not supporting agri-
culture.
"Other countries will be feeding
Canada if we don't change our
course," said Steckle. He added that
he is pushing for food security in
Canada.
Mitchell said she is "quite
steamed" about Agricorp, the
Ontario agency that administers
risk management programs for
farmers.
Mitchell supported a call for an
audit of Agricorp in a Jan. 23 reso-
lution by the Huron County Corn,
Wheat and Soy Producers.

She added that Ontario
Agriculture Minister Leona
Dombrowsky is negotiating for a

"Leona has dogged (Federal

While Mitchell said educational
programs promoting agriculture in
the high schools will get young peo-
ple back into farming, Hill dis-
agreed.
"There's no point in providing
education if the financial side is not
addressed. It's not because they
don't understand agriculture. It's
the negative returns and lack of
predictability," he said.
Hill added that Ontario agricul-
ture gets seven per cent of the

Proposed
St. Columban
wind projects
to begin
environmental
assessment
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Two 10 -megawatt wind projects
planned for the St. Columban area
are about to begin an environmental
assessment that could take a year to
complete, says Jose Menendez, con-
sultant for CASA Engineering and
Construction in Toronto.
"We thought it would be a good
area for a wind farm and a good
place to hook up to an electrical con-
nection," says Menendez of the two
proposed projects.
Studying the area between
Seaforth and Dublin from Highway
8 to Winthrop Road, the environ-
mental assessment will look into
both positive and negative impacts
from the projects on factors such as
land use, birds, habitat, noise and
socio-economic factors.
"There are a number of studies to
be done - some of them seasonally -
driven. It will probably take 12
months to complete and then it's
sent to the Ministry of the
Environment for approval," he says.
Menendez says CASA
Engineering and Construction has
been monitoring the wind in the
area for two years this August.
"The wind resources are reason-
able. ,Now, we have to see if the
power can be sold and at what price
and what the construction and
maintenance costs will be," he says.
Menendez says while it's too soon
yet to know if the project will go
ahead, some local landowners have
been approached about locating
wind turbines on their property.
"The number of landowners we
need hasn't been determined yet but
we have been able to find some will-
ing hosts," he says.
Each project will need approxi-
mately four to six turbines.
The projects are being proposed
under the Ontario Power
Authority's Standard Offer Program
for Renewable Energy Generators.
