St. Anne's drama club performing at Sears Festival

The St. Anne's drama club
offered theatre lovers the
best of both worlds, as stu-
dents took the stage in two
one -act plays this week.
lrn-.preparation for the
Sears Drama Festival in
Listowel this week, students
and staff at the Clinton
school held three perfor-
mances of Check Please and
Charley.
Written and directed by
se#for students Sam Romijn
and Johannes Knap,
Charley "is the touching
story of a young boy who
wants to do what is right for
his harsh foster parents."
"I just came to school the
first day and Sam asked if I
wanted to help write a play,
so we got started," Knap
recalled.
"Things really seemed to
come together."
Three weeks later,
Charley was complete.
And while they originally
wanted to write a musical,
both Romijn and Knap
agreed it was too much
work.
Instead, they made
Charley's piano a focal point
of the play. Growing up in
the late 1940s, he dreams of
playing the piano on the
radio.
"(The plqy) is based on
music, but it's not a musi-
cal," Romijn explained.
Music featured in Charley
is composed by Romijn and
Knap.
The cast'includes Ainsley
Flynn, Ivan Raczycki, Brent
Schmidt and the directors
themselves.
Romijn and Knap are opti-
mistic about their chances
at the festival.
"The adjucators always
seem to look highly upon
student -written and stu-
dent -directed plays," Romijn
said.
Heather Thompson will be
sitting in the director's chair
once again as the club pre-
sents Check Please, a
romantic comedy written by
American playwright
Jonathan Rand.
"It's a comedy about a guy
and a girl who go on several
blind dates and somehow
they all go wrong," said
Thompson, who helped pick
the script.
"There weren't a lot of
plays that were appropriate
for a Catholic school, but
then we found this one and
it was really good and funny
too."
Jacqueline Bengough and
Joel Grace play the lead
roles, supported by 12 -mem-
ber cast.
The 61st annual Sears
Drama Festival will be held
in Listowel from Feb. 28 to
March 3 and feature 13 pro-
ductions from 10 area high
schools.
St. Anne's will present
both of its plays on Feb. 28.
Central Huron Secondary
School will also be entering
a play — The Zoo Story by
Edward Albee — into the fes-
tival.
Awards will be presented
to winning schools on March
3.
