"The boundary bridges are being dumped on us but are they going to lower the levy to us? No," said Mayor Joe Seili. From a list of 26 boundary bridges with estimated repair costs of $1.045 million, 12 of the bridges with estimated repair costs of $474,000 are in Huron East. "The rural communities are the only ones that will get hit hard if they download the bridges," said Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan. "This is nothing but a windfall for the Town of Goderich. It doesn't affect them one iota. It's good for the county budget and the Town of Building to be torn down to prepare for Brussels library Huron East council accepted a quotation of $4,500 from Total Demolition Inc. to demolish the con- crete shop behind the Brussels library at its Feb. 20 meeting. The building is being torn down to give Huron East three lots on which to situate a library building. Council was told two years ago by the Huron County Library Board that it must renovate the current Dale Carnegie library to bring it to board standards. Currently 1,275 sq. ft., the library must be enlarged to at least 2,200 sq. ft. and be made wheelchair accessible. Council also decided to engage the services of a professional engi- neer to provide a cost estimate for a pro- posed addition to the existing library or a completely new 2,500 square foot structure. "If a new building were cheaper, would this library be coming down, because I know there was a lot of con- troversy over that," asked Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler. "That was a major issue and I don't think that would ever hap- pen," said Deputy - Mayor Bernie MacLellan. Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan said he didn't yet know what the costs would be of various alterna- tives. "It will still be a public decision," he said. A public meeting will be sched- uled once the engineer's report is complete. By Susan Hundertmark Goderich," he said. "It's win-win for Goderich because there are no boundary bridges in Goderich," agreed Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler. MacLellan argued that because bridges are in rural areas, provin- cial funding to the county should reflect that. "We've got to maintain the road system in front of farm property and bridges are part of that pic- ture," he said. Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight point- ed out that provincial funding is not tied to bridges currently. Seili said he'd be happy to take over bridges that had been brought up to standard but was nervous that some of them were built as far back as 1949. "They're proposing to download the bridges along with the estimat- ed cost to replace them and we've been fighting that for four years," he said. Steffler agreed that the actual bridges costs to fix the bridges could easily end up being much higher than the estimates. "Get them brought up to date first," he said. Boundary bridges in Huron East include six in Grey, four of which are on the border of Grey and Elma Township and five in Tuckersmith, three of which are on the border of Tuckersmith and Hibbert Township. One bridge is on the border of McKillop and Hullett. The most expensive estimate of the 12 is the Beam Bridge on Hensall Road .5 km west of Chiselhurst Road, estimated to cost $250,000 for a complete rehabilita- tion. The rest range from $5,000 to $32,000. Huron East has over 100 bridges within its borders, many of which are scheduled for repairs. "I've got enough of my own bridges to fix," said Seili. vim Excavating Inc. 1 I A OF THE WEEK "YOUR RENOVATION AND HOME SPECIALISTS!"
