side porch and the aim of getting
the two residents out of the house.
"We knew there were at least two
occupants. We went around to the
back and there they were coming
down the ladder. He was in bare
feet and she was in slippers," said
Phillips.
"That's John - he's a good man
and he's in good shape. He did a
fantastic job for his age and he
deserves a lot of credit."
The two were still wearing the
same smoky and soot -smudged
clothing after returning from a four-
hour stay at Seaforth Community
Hospital where they were treated
for smoke inhalation but were oth-
erwise none the
worse for wear.

Council warms up to
An Inconvenient Truth
Huron East councillors
continue to pass Al Gore's
An Inconvenient Truth
back and forth as they
educate themselves on
global warming.
The book was brought to
council by local business-
man Pete Klaver who
asked council to become
leaders on environmental
issues.
"I rented the video and
would recommend anyone
to watch it," said Seaforth
Coun. Joe Steffler.
Mayor Joe Seili said
that once councillors have
finished reading the book
or viewing the film, he is
hoping they will come
back to council with ideas
that could locally combat
global warming.
the enclosed side porch where the
fire is believed to have started.
John said his pulse was "very
high" when we went to the hospital
but was fine several hours later.
"My feet were frozen. My toes are
still cold," he said that morning.
"Smoke detectors are a good
thing," he added.
Kwong said Wednesday's fire was
the second fire she escaped from
with her husband. In the 1970s, a
fire in a neighbouring apartment on
the second floor above the former
Triangle Discount (now the GT Mini
Mart) at the main intersection in
Seaforth forced the couple from
their bed in the middle of the night.
"This is the second time he woke
me up and saved my life," she said.

Huron East Fire Chief Marty
Bedard said the swinging door into
the kitchen prevented the fire from
spreading faster than it did and
because of the smoke detector and
John's quick call to 911, the rest of
the house was saved.
"This is one of the success stories
for smoke detectors. The smoke
detector saved their lives for sure
and we were able to stop the fire
before it spread," said Bedard.
He said that while the cause of
the fire has still not been deter-
mined, firefighters ruled out the
woodstove since it began in the
porch used to store firewood.
The Jews are currently staying
with friends in Clinton.
