Seaforth man jumps from second
storey to save wife in house fire
Susan Hundertmark
When 75 -year-old John Jew woke to
the sound of the smoke detector in his
Chalk Street home around 1 a.m. last
Wednesday, Feb. 21, he immediately
went downstairs to find his wife, 77 -
year -old Kwong asleep in front of the TV
in the living room.
Smoke was travelling up the stairs
from the kitchen and John picked up the
phone on the wall over the living room
couch to phone 911.
By then, there was too much smoke to
make it out the front door and the Jews
retreated up the stairs to a back room
on the second floor.
"We stood on the balcony upstairs and
I jumped off. I didn't think - I just
jumped," said John of his 12 -foot leap to
the snowy ground below in his bare feet.
"They said it's a good thing I didn't
break a leg," he said, adding that he had
a few cuts on his feet from the ice.
Then, pulling a ladder over to his wife,
John helped Kwong down the rungs of
the ladder to safety.
"My slippers kept dropping off and he
picked them up for me," said Kwong,
pointing to a pair of sodden and dirty
fuzzy slippers on the floor.

Huron East, hospital trust at impasse
with negotiations for FHT building

Denouncing the "cloud of
secrecy" he said is hanging
over negotiations between
Huron East and the Seaforth
Community Hospital Trust
for a building for the
Seaforth family health team
(FHT), Arend Streutker told
the Seaforth Local Advisory
Committee (LAC) Monday
he's not sure if an agreement
will ever be reached.
"There is no permanent
dwelling for the health team
yet. The town is still
negotiating with the
(hospital) trust but. I don't
know if they will ever
succeed," he said.
"To me, there should be
more openness that is not
there and I don't know what
to do," said Streutker, a
member of the Seaforth FHT
board.
Huron East council passed
a motion at its Jan. 9
meeting saying it would
work with the Seaforth
Community Development
Trust to find a location for
the FHT in a facility - either
the existing medical clinic or
a brand new facility near the
hospital - tailored to meet
the FHT's needs.
Mayor Joe Seili - who is
now also chair of the FHT
board since Streutker
stepped down from the
position in January - and
Deputy -Mayor Bernie
MacLellan said Monday in a
joint phone interview that
negotiations have been
private because of a request
by the hospital trust.
"The four members of the
hospital trust wanted us to
