Seaforth minor hockey teams heading into playoffs
From Page 12
teams, which include the peewees,
atoms, bantams and midgets, they
all started WOAA playoff round
robin play this past weekend.
Coach of the bantams Matt
Cartwright said, as his team
showed by winning a tournament
earlier in the season in Exeter, they
have the capability to win the big
games.
"Our boys have really come a long
way. I think we'll do good (in the
playoffs) and go on to the finals," he
said.
As for the atoms, they played their
first game of the round robin Feb.
15, tying Mitchell 2-2.
"This season has gone really well,"
said coach Pete Martene. "Better
than I thought it would."
Martene recalled that he feared a
"long season," was ahead after the
atoms started out only 1-4.
"But then they went on a five -
game winning streak. and they've
kept things going since then," he
added, finishing with a 17-7-1
record including tournaments.
Round robin play for the local
league teams will be finished by
March. 11.
Meanwhile, of Seaforth's four
girls' minor hockey teams, two are
still playing in the Ontario Women
Hockey Association (OWHA) play-
offs.
The bantam girls finished their
first round of OWHA playoffs with
two wins against Belmore 6-1 and
Lucknow 2-1, with two ties against
Milverton 1-1 and St. Marys 2-2 and
one loss against Mitchell 1-0.
"That loss was our fourth game in
six nights," says coach Tony Arts.
The bantam girls move into their
next round robin in a group of six
teams playing against Beaver
Valley, Owen Sound, Kincardine, St.
Marys and a team still to be deter-
mined. The top two teams will move
on to the provincials.
"Our girls are doing extremely
well," says Arts. "We were an under-
dog team and a lot of people weren't
expecting much from us but we've
developed a lot over the season.
We've got a good shot at the provin-
cials."
The peewees opened up their play-
off Feb. 18 with a win/lost against
Saugeen Shores.
The peewees are in a round robin
with Saugeen Shores, Beaver Valley
and Walkerton. Only the top team
advances to the OWHA provincials.
Coach Dave Murray said despite
the girls' recent win at the
International Silver Stick tourna-
ment in Sarnia, they know there are
no guarantees come playoffs.
"All of our games were so close (at
the Silver Stick tournament), I don't
think anybody is going to be handed
the title to go the provincials," he
said.
Murray added that the girls are
evenly matched against just about
every team in the girls B division.
Seaforth's peewee C and atoms
girls did not advance past the round
robin stage at the OWHA playoffs
and are now preparing for league
playdowns.
