Cold spell wreaking havoc
on pipes and furnaces
Jeff 1Heucher1
The recent cold spell that has seen the mer-
cury dip down as low as -18 C at
times, has wreaked havoc on fur-
naces and pipes, and conse-
quently, meant good business for
local plumbing and heating com-
panies.
"We've been extremely busy
over the last couple of weeks
with a lot of, furnace services
and frozen pipes," says Ian Peck,
managing partner at Seaforth
Plumbing and Heating.
He says when it comes to fur-
naces, the majority of calls has
been over snow plugging the
vents - some to the point that
the furnace has quit all together.
"You need to keep the vents
clear of snow, because the intake
will suck it up," he says.
Peck recommends keeping on eye on your
furnaces vents throughout the winter and
making sure they are
clear of snow build up.
Jeff Holman, owner of
J.D. Holman
Mechanical Inc., says
he's had "a couple extra
calls a day," since the
cold temperatures have
set in.
He says the two most
common service calls
he's received have had
to do with snow clog -
does shift drastically from one day to the
next, the ignitors can crack and then cannot
take the electricity.
The other major problem has been with
frozen water pipes.
Peck says many of the water
pipes have cracked under the
cold temperatures.
And now that the temperature
has risen slightly and the ice in
the pipes has begun to thaw, he
says he's starting to get calls
about leaks as well. ,
Peck says it's important that
home owners remember to drain
their water lines properly and
not leave them sitting full over
the winter.
That goes especially, he adds,
"for outside taps, or taps in
unused rooms that are subject to
cold drafts or wind."
Holman also recommends
keeping any outdoor pipes on over the winter
just enough so that they drip, which will pre -
them from freezing up.
