Both the Hitmen A and B juvenile teams will be tak- ing part. Coach of both Hitmen teams Rob Hunking says both teams are heading into the provincials with opti- mism and are expecting much better results then at the national qualifying tournament this past November. At the tournament, the Hitmen, represented by mostly A team players and some B, failed to earn a qualifying spot, but have since learned they will be going as a replacement team. "We want to redeem our- selves and prove we should have won the qualifier," says Hunking of the upcom- ing tournament. And he adds, "If they play to their potential, both teams should do well." Hunking says the Hitmen A have played very strong- ly as of late and should be considered one of the tour- nament favourites on the juvenile side. "We had a very good tour- nament in Brussels (over the Jan. 26-27 weekend), so we're heading in the right direction," he adds. At the Brussels tourna- ment, the Hitmen A were eliminated in the semi- finals. In local league play, they're currently in second place with a 10-4-1 record. As for the Hitmen B, while more consistent play lately has yet to translate into the team's first win of the season - in which they still sit in last at 0-13-2 - Hunking says they have improved. "Our last two games have been ties and they had a couple good games in the Brussels tournament," he adds. The Hitmen A will open the provincials against their "perennial rivals," the Windsor Riot, says Hunking. The Hitmen B will open up against the winner of the Eastern Ice Dogs from Ottawa versus the Palmerston Posse. It is a double -knockout tournament, where each team is guaranteed two games. Hunking says the Hitmen A could realistically win the provincials - if they play as well as they can. For the Hitmen B, Hunking says the team has struggled to put the ball in the net throughout the sea- son, and if they conpinue struggling at the provin- cials, it will be a quick tour- nament. Meanwhile, Seaforth will also be represented by its Assassins juvenile girls team, coached by Georgina Reynolds. She says the girls need lit- tle mo;tion heading into the pro• cials. Their first game will be against the Ottawa -based Flames, which defeated the Assassins not once, but twice at the national quali- fying tournament. "We have a vendetta against them. These kids are ready to beat them - it's payback time," she says. Since returning from the qualifying tournament, Reynolds says the girls have been more focussed and "stepped it up during games and at practices." "They've become more aggressive. They're hitting the ball harder," she says. And, the hard work is slowly starting to show. The Assassins currently sit fourth in the local league at 3-10-2 - but just recently recorded two ties and a win. "They're excited and determined they're not going to lose to the same team again," she says. Reynolds adds that since the Assassins play only adult teams in the local league, it should be inter- esting to see how they fare against other juvenile teams, but she's hoping for at least a third place finish. Seaforth will also be rep- resented at the provincials by its midget girls and boys, peewees and bantams. PVP ,•- A•P •- wPI "w .fir /P. NO. •w i '►t•• AO• ••r •74 •
