MVP: Stephanie Sluys See SCOREBOARD, Page 18 The Huron Expositor • February 7, 2007 Page 11 Sports Seaforth peewee girls win gold at Silver Stick tourney Jeff H e u c h e r t Seaforth's peewee girls' B hockey team was the winner at this year's International Silver Stick finals in Sarnia. The girls played five games over three days this past weekend, coming home without a single loss. "We have such a consistent bunch of hockey players and they play so well together," said coach Dave Murray. "Our centres played particularly well, our wingers did a great job in getting the puck out of our end and into theirs and our defence never panicked and stayed super steady," he added. The Seaforth girls started the round-robin play in Pool A, along with Sarnia, Sault Ste. Marie and Saugeen Shores. In their opening game Friday night, Seaforth defeated home -town Sarnia 4-0 with goal scorers Shannen Murray, Heather Heard, Nicole Marriage and Abby McGavin. The game's MVP was Maddie Melady. On Saturday, Seaforth tied both of their games — first to Saugeen Shores 1-1 (with goal scorer Heidi Raynard and MVP Stephanie Sluys) and then 2-2 with Sault Ste. Marie (with goal scorers Nicole Marriage and Abby McGavin and MVP Nicole Marriage). Seaforth's 1-0-2 record in pool play was good enough for second place in the pool and advanced them to the semi-finals against the winners from Pool B and the undefeated Clearview. In the semi-final game, Seaforth squeaked out a close affair 1-0 with Nicole Marriage again scoring. "That was a really tight game," recalled Murray. "But they played their best hockey of the tournament (in that game)." The tournament final was a rematch between Seaforth and Saugeen Shores. However the final was not a close as their first match up, as Seaforth held on to a 2-0 lead to win the tournament final 3-1. "Our girls just seemed to have it in them — they wanted it more," says Murray, who noted that despite the two -goal difference, the final was actually a very tight game. "(Our goaltender) Stephanie Sluys made some unbelievable saves at crucial times, but it was a total team effort, offensively and defensively." "YOUR RENOVATION AND HOME SPECIALISTS!".
