New 32 -lot subdivision proposed
for former public school property

The new owner of the former
Seaforth Public School is planning to
build a 32 -lot subdivision on the 7.76 -
acre property.
Brian and Shana Barnim, of Bayfield,
owners of Coastal Enterprises 2005
Ltd., recently bought the property from
Jack Vanderweg, of Arva after being
approached by real estate agent
Brenda Campbell, of Coldwell Banker.
"It was presented to us as a potential
development property, we researched it
and decided to go forward," says Brian
Barnim, who is also a councillor on
Central Huron council.
"We're pretty excited about it and
there's a need for it," he says. "The
opportunity is a viable one and it's in a
desirable part of town."
Vanderweg bought the property in
2003 when the school closed and was
auctioned off by the Avon Maitland
District School Board.
The proposed subdivision, using a
plan of subdivision from 1952 drawn up
before the former public school was
located there, will aim at building
affordable housing.
"We're looking at the area that's most
needed in Seaforth. It won't be low
income or high income but affordable,"
he says.
Barnim says the subdivision must
still receive approval from Huron East
council for a change in zoning from the
current CF (community facility) zoning
to R2 (residential) to conform with the
surrounding neighbourhood.
"The municipality has been very
helpful and eager to see something
happen to the property," says Barnim.
While he's not yet sure what sort of
housing will be built, Barnim says the
