This past October, the committee - made up of students from each grade -organized a school food drive prior to Thanksgiving, while more recently they organized a Christmas Bureau Toy Drive between St. Patrick's in Dublin and St. Columban - all for area families in need. • And most recently, they set their sights a little bit further. This past Friday, members of the committee held their second (of many to come) popcorn sales at the school, where the proceeds will be used to sponsor a family in a third world country. "We're trying to look after the people within our community as well as communities abroad that need assistance....those that are not as fortunate as ourselves," said committee staff representative Sarah Breen. During the first popcorn sale of the year in December, the commit= tee raised $56. On Jan. 26, they raised an additional $98. And, when that money is added to funds raised through a number of theme days the school held - where students paid 25 cents to wear pajamas or a hat to school - and money raised from a senior student dance, they already total over $200, well over the $156 they needed to sponsor a family. "We're at our goal and it's just January. We have had lots of sup- port from students," commented Breen. "They're really excited about it." She added that although they have already raised as much money as they were hoping for, they plan to continue running the popcorn sales each month until the end of the school year. Breen said at that time the com- mittee will spend any extra money they have raised - after covering the costs of the popcorn - on a good cause within the community.
