Devereaux excited
for second half
of NHL season
Jeff Heuchert
Boyd Devereaux and the
Toronto Maple Leafs could
not have asked for a better
• start to the second half of
the season.
The Maple Leafs returned
to action this past
Saturday from the All Star
break with a 4-1 win over
the Montreal Canadiens in
Toronto.
And as usual, the storied
rivalry lived up to fans'
expectations, and those of
28 -year-old Devereaux -
who was yet to play against
Montreal since being called
up to Toronto on Dec. 28.
"I was looking forward to
this game all week. It's a
real neat tradition and it
was a lot of fun - the crowd
was electric," said
Devereaux after the game.
"This was a great way to
come back from the break."
Against Montreal,
Devereaux logged just over
16 minutes of ice time -
several on the penalty kill -
and recorded two shots and
two penalty minutes on a
holding call in the second
period.
In 12 games with the
Maple Leafs since coming
up from the AHL's Toronto
Marlies, Devereaux has
two goals and six assists,
with a plus/minus of plus
five.
And while his strong play
has contributed to his
renewed confidence in him-
self, it appears that
Devereaux is also building
the confidence of his coach-
ing staff, which despite the
return of several Maple
Leafs from the injured list,
has kept him on the Leafs'
27 -man roster.
And as Devereaux points
out, the coaching staff has
been great in giving him
lots of ice time each game.
"I feel really good. I'm
taking it game by game,
but I feel like I'm contribut-
ing," said Devereaux.
