Students at St. Patrick's School in
Dublin were introduced to a differ-
ent kind of storytelling last
Wednesday morning.
On one of her many stops touring
schools throughout Huron and
Perth counties, professional story-
teller Gail Fricker entertained stu-
dents with her less -than -conven-
tional retelling of several children's'
classics.
Calling on her experience in live
theatre, Fricker, a Stratford resi-
dent, used several props and plenty
of student participation in her story-
telling.
"Kids love stories...and they love
to be told to them, rather than have
to read them. This way they can use
their imagination and it promotes
oral literacy," said Fricker.
"And I'll bet some of these kids
will go and write stories to -what
they've heard (during my presenta-
tion) later," she added.
Wanting to connect with the stu-
dents the best she can, Fricker said
she always attempts to tell stories
with themes easily relatable to the
students.
In her presentation at St.
Patrick's, Fricker retold the Robert
Munsch classics Jonathan Cleans
Up...Then He Heard a Sound and
Thomas' Snowsuit, as well as
Margery Cuyler's Biggest Best
Snowman.
While recounting the stories,
Fricker regularly asked for student
participation - be it by making
sounds or gestures, or by accompa-
nying her in front of the other stu-
dents to play a character in the
story.

While the exterior of this two-bedroom home,
especially designed for a narrow lot, exudes
country charm, the interior contains all the
conveniences a contemporary family could
desire.A flight of stairs leads to the main floor
and into a foyer with a handy coat closet. To the
right is the combination dining room/great room,
with a built-in gas fireplace and a door that
opens on a balcony that overlooks the front
garden. Through an archway from the dining
room is the kitchen, where the U-shaped counter
configuration promises efficiency.

"This was an excel-
lent opportunity to
have a storyteller come
to our school," said
Grade 1 and 2 teacher
Kathy Rowland. "She
told stories that relate
to (the kids) like messy
rooms and playing in
the snow."
"It's a lost art in a
sense," added Rowland.
With a masters
degree in Story Arts,
Fricker has toured
around the world
entertaining children
in Japan, Thailand,
Kenya, England and
the United States, as
well as in more local
communities such as
St. Marys. She also
teaches part-time at

Stratford.
