"On a weekend when the building is booked from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the lone staff member on duty is unable to meet the demands of the consumers. This leads to the continued decline of the overall maintenance of the building," it said. The three minor sports groups said in the letter they believe "significant" revenue is being lost when the groups have to book ice time outside of Seaforth. The letter said minor hockey spent $18,000 out of town last year for ice and the figure will be higher this year. Kevin Campbell, presi- dent of Seaforth Ringette, said in a phone interview that with 300 kids and their parents involved in the three associations, their concerns should be listened to. "There are some deep- seated communication issues that need to be resolved and it's going to take a lot of dedicated peo- ple to resolve it," he said. Campbell said as the arena gets older, it will take more repair and mainte- nance to keep it at an "acceptable level." "The associations feel we're taking a back seat at the arena. We're trying to bring forth the concept that we represent probably 1,000 voters in Seaforth," he said. "And, we're here for gen- erations. We're the engine that drives this thing and I think we represent the voice of the parents. They've for- gotten who the customer is," he said. Minor hockey presi- dent Ron Pryce said during a phone inter- view that the issues of concern have been accu- mulating for a few years and while the group has gone to the arena board with concerns, they've "gotten nowhere." "We're just looking out for the kids," he said. Seaforth Figure Skating president Tracy Schelken said during a phone interview that she has also sent a let- ter to council outlining her concerns booking ice for the club's carnival. She said she was told after having tickets and posters printed that the Saturday, Feb. 18 date she booked was no longer available and has had to rebook for March 5. "And, we know from past experience that we won't make as much money on our fundrais- er on a weeknight as we would on the weekend," she said. Schelken said figure skating has also experi- enced trouble with ridges on the ice and would appreciate hav- ing the heaters turned Huron East agrees to buy St. Columban soccer fields Huron East has agreed to buy 50 per cent of the soccer fields in St. Columban in cooperation with St. Columban minor soccer. While the deal for the final price is still in nego- tiation, the municipality will use the parkland reserve account for its share of seven acres from the St. Columban parish association. The soccer club will manage the property and pay the costs for operation and maintenance. "If we purchase it and they don't use it, what do we do then? Sell it for houses?" asked Deputy - Mayor Bernie MacLellan. Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan said St. Columban soccer will also have first right of refusal if the municipality decides to sell the land. By Susan Hundertmark on for parents while the younger skaters are on the ice. "There was no negative effect on the ice when we used the heaters in the past," she said. Huron East Clerk - Administrator Jack McLachlan said a meeting was held to talk to the presi- dents of the three associa- tions last Thursday and a follow-up meeting will be held after the next Seaforth arena board meeting Feb. 8. "Some of the complaints are open to interpretation but we want to work with these groups. They are our users," he said. We'll help keep your RSP on track.
