In an effort to rebuild the band - especially
in the Seaforth area - the Seaforth and
District All -Girls' Marching Band is offering
free music lessons at Seaforth
Public School.
"We're going to go into this in a
big way to get the band built up
again and we want to get more
people in Seaforth involved,"
says band leader Charlie
Kalbfleisch.
With 15 Seaforth-area girls
already members of the 60 -mem-
ber band, Kalbfleisch says he
hopes to add at least 10 more
Seaforth girls to the group.
"That would make me very
happy. It's really good when the
band originated here to have
more members from here," he
says.
So far, the band has been offer -
attend since he has three or four more trum-
pets that aren't being used.
"We're finding that in Seaforth, kids aren't
getting any opportunities to learn a musical
instrument so it's easiest to start here from
scratch with the younger kids," he
- says, adding that neither
Seaforth Public nor St. James
School is offering instrumental
music.
He says the band needs to go
to greater lengths to recruit
members these days because
"kids aren't as exuberant as
they used to be."
"We used to have to cut kids
there were so many who wanted
to be involved. Not everyone
wants to participate these days
and it is hard work to learn an
instrument," he says.
However, he adds that getting
involved in music can be "a life-
time experience."

6:30 p.m. before the band's regular practice.
Seven of the 11 are from Seaforth while two
are from Brussels andtwo from Holmesville.
Kalbfleisch says more girls are welcome to
Kalbfleisch adds that playing
rock and roll music is also a draw to the band.
"The band really has a good time with
that," he says.
After March break, Kalbfleisch says free
lessons will also begin for clarinet and saxo-
phone.
