This freed up a few spots for teams that did not qualify for the championships at last year's quali- fying tournament, such as the Hitmen. At the qualifying tournament in November, the Hitmen finished sec- ond, after losing the decisive game in sudden -death overtime. Only teams that finished in first automatically qualified for the nationals. "When I told (the players), it wasn't like they were jumping up and down for joy. They're glad to be going, but they just wish we could have earned it our own way," said Hunking. "This will be the last year for a lot of the guys and they're happy to be going," he added. "We've been there enough times that (the other teams) know that we're not a weak team to begin with." Prior to this year's qualifying tournament, the Hitmen had quali- fied for the nationals five times in the past seven years. One setback this year Hunking pointed out, is that with nearly two months less time to prepare for the nationals, players have also had less time to raise the necessary funds to finance the trip. 'This will be the last year for a lot of the guys and they're happy to be going,'-- Hitmen coach Rob Hunking Hunking estimated they need around $15,000. He said that the team is holding a couple of draws and hopes to raise some money at the Ontario Senior Broomball Championships in Stratford this March. "We'll get there," Hunking assured. "But the more we raise, the less (the players will) have to put into it out of their own pock- ets." This year's nationals will take place from March 21-24. Hunking added however, that before he can begin to get his team prepared for the nationals, they still have to prepare for the Provincial Juvenile Broomball Championships in February near Barrie. And, it's expected some of the Hitmen players will fill a spot or two with the Seaforth-based Cyclones senior men's team, that will be competing March 16-18 in Stratford at the Senior Provincial Championships. "Some of our guys will play (in Stratford), have one day off and then board a plane (for Regina). They're going to be playing a lot of broomball over that week," Hunking said.
