Jane Falconer hired as executive
director of Seaforth family health team

After working for the
past 25 years as an execu-
tive director for various
organizations, Jane
Falconer says she's excited
to become executive direc-
tor of the Seaforth family
health team (FHT).
"You can make it become
whatever the community
needs it to be," she said of
the community -run FHT.
With incorporation of
the new not-for-profit
organization completed in
November, Falconer says
she'll be taking care of the
day-to-day administration
of the FHT and making
presentations to various
community organizations
about what the FHT's role
will be in the Seafor-tic
area.
"We're starting to work
with local groups and we
have an openness to work
with existing agencies to
help and enhance them.
We can't be everything to
everyone but we can take
some of the load off," she
says. -
Falconer says the big
push for the FHT will be
preventative healthcare,
with programs planned in
obesity and smoking ces-
sation.
"We'll be much more
holistic in approach with a
healthcare team. We'll be
looking at your whole life
and the triggers and
stresses and can provide
much better care so you
can better understand
your- disease," says
Falconer.
"It really is a team of
people looking after one
patient," she says.
Falconer says she hopes
the FHT can take a lot of
stress off of family doctors
and provide greater com-
munication between
healthcare professionals.
"We're not here to
change what they're
doing. We want to hear
how we can make things
better. And, my role is to
support those efforts," she
says.
Falconer has been exec-
utive director for such
groups as the Huron
County Child Abuse
Prevention Committee,
the Public Service Agency
of Canada, Family
Mediation Canada and
most recently, the Grand
Bend Family Health
Clinic.
She says she has also
worked as a volunteer for
the Community Family
Health Team Network in
Ontario and helped write
the proposal for the FHT
in South Huron.
The community board
running the FHT includes
chair Arend Streutker,
vice chair Joe Seili, secre-
tary -treasurer Devon
Sanderson, members -at -
large Joe Steffler and Jim
McNichol and directors
Gwen Devereaux, Dan
Stringer, Bob Fisher,
Chris Lee and Dr. Dan

Rooyakkers.
Advisors to
the board
include Ralph
Laviolette, Paul
Nichol, Brian
Wightman and
Dave Murray.
The board will
be meeting a
minimum of four
times a year,
with its execu-
tive meeting a
minimum of
nine times a
year.

They're here.
Penny Nelligan, director of the
Huron County Health Unit, report-
ed to county council last week that
the two nemeses of healthcare pro-
fessionals — the Norwalk virus and
influenza — have now found
unwilling hosts within the county's
boundaries.
Nelligan told county council,
Wednesday, that the first Norwalk
virus case had been reported, and
that an as yet unidentified strain of
influenza is sweeping across the
region.
"We've had an outbreak," she
said.
Nelligan told
council the
Norwalk virus
usually runs its
course over a 48-
hour period and
includes nausea
and diarrhea,
