Quartet and children entertain at Cavan service
The Huron Expositor • January 3, 2007 Page 23
Our Christmas was definitely
green and even quite mild, the
warmest I remember.
Rev. Josermon. at Cavan was
titled _ jhe Miracle of Christmas."
Greeters and collectors were Diane
Anderson and Ruth Campbell.
Lighting of the fourth Advent can-
dle was done by Nic Zwep and Judy
Beuerman.
Cavan hosted the Christmas Eve
service. The Sunday School children
acted out the Christmas Story with
the Winthrop Quartet and Cassie
Hoegy assisting with the musical
portion. Lori and Mike Goos por-
trayed Mary and Joseph with baby
Carley as the infant Jesus. Several
readings pertaining to Christmas
were given by Rev. John and
Natalie Gould. Christmas carols
were sung. Dave and Carol McClure
were the greeters and collectors. A
social time followed.
Doug and Gail Schroeder held
their family
Christmas on
Sunday. Steve and
Joanne and Brad
and Laurie and their families spent
the day in Winthrop. On Christmas
Day they travelled to Grimsby to be
with Gail's mother and other family
members.
Glen and Marg McClure spent
Christmas at their son Dan's in St.
Marys. Christmas Day was spent
with Marg Rogerson in Clinton.
Bob and Ruth Campbell spent
Christmas with Beatrice Campbell.
On Boxing Day the Campbell family
gathered together at Lisa and
Martin to Brinke's in Clinton.
Ron and Darlene Campbell and
their family, Vince and Sheila Nicol,
Shannon and Danny and Beatrice
Campbell spent Boxing Day at
Brian and Carolanne Campbell's
and their family.
Doug and Vicki Campbell and
girls and Ian and
Stephanie Peck
and family cele-
brated their
Christmas on Sat. at the home of
Marion Peck, Clinton.
Brian and Susan MacDonald and
Stephanie spent a couple of days in
Ripley celebrating Christmas with
the MacDonalds and Elliotts. Jason
MacDonald is out in Vancouver
where he hoped
to avoid a lot of
snow but as we
hear, they have
more snow than
we have here.
However where
he is has not
been as hard hit
as some places
nearby.

Happy New Year everyone!
We here at the Retirement
Home hope that everyone
had a wonderful and healthy
holiday season. Time sure
does fly by, we can hardly
believe it is the beginning of
another New Year. December
has been a very busy month
for all of us at the retirement
home. In December we
enjoyed once again an excel-
lent Family Christmas
Dinner. Oh my what a won-
derful feast.
We have been enjoying the
physiotherapy programs that
are being offered. It is great
to have the one-on-one ses-
sions and it makes for a fun
afternoon when we are all
exercising together. Fred and
Grace Munnings
continue to
entertain us
with their story
telling and hymn
sings. We had
many surprise
visits from carol-
ers this past

Christmas season. It was a
very pleasant surprise and
very much appreciated.
We have heard through the
holidays that it really didn't
feel like the right season due
to the lack of snow, but the
weather was great for all the
travellers to get around. It
was so nice to see so many
visitors.
A very warm welcome to

1932 DESOTO ROADS I'ER 75 YEARS OLD
By Bill Sherk "The Old Car Detective"
Walter P. Chrysler began building cars bearing his name in 1924.One
year later, he turned the Maxwell -Chalmers Company into the Chrysler
Corporation and was well on his way to building his automotive empire.
In 1928, he entered the low-priced field by introducing the Plymouth,
and also introduced the DeSoto to fill the price gap between Plymouth
and Chrysler. Just four days before the new DeSoto was scheduled for its
first public display, a deal was struck whereby the Dodge Brothers com-
pany became part of the Chrysler Corporation. Thus, Walter P. Chrysler
ended up with three new cars in one year: Dodge, Plymouth, and DeSoto.
The new DeSoto was a sales success with nearly 65,000 cars sold in its
first model year of 1929. With the stock market crash and the onset of the
Depression, car sales nose-dived. Fewer than 25,000 DeSotos were sold
in the 1932 model year, despite ads hailing the new DeSoto as "the Hit of
the Highway" and "America's lowest -priced Six."
As a publicity stunt, a '32 DeSoto roadster was assembled on the 71st
floor of the Chrysler Building in New York and remained on display
throughout the model year - but only 894 roadsters were built. The car
was rare even when new and very few still survive.
The car was nearly chopped up by a hot-rodder in the 1950s. Then it
was bought by the man who later so it to Cockburn, who traveled far
and wide in search of parts. The rear u per he purchased in person
from a gynecologist in Louisiana.
Cockburn was proud to call himself a member in good standing of the
"dirty fingernail club" because he performed much of the work himself.
The result was a flawless restoration of an absolutely beautiful car.
The aerodynamic grille was likely inspired by Harry Miller's popular
front -wheel -drive Indianapolis racing cars of that era. Grilles were a rel-
atively new feature on cars in 1932, and made the older cars with
exposed radiators (the Model A Ford, for example) look old-fashioned.
DeSoto's new curved grille was distinctive enough to he eye-catching
without being controversial.
The numerous bars 011 the grille require painstaking care when restor-
ing one of these cars, and Cockburn needed grilles from three other 1932
DeSotos to finish off his.
'ihe big "6" on the red crank -hole cover at the bottom of the grille
denotes the six -cylinder engine: a water-cooled, in-line, L -head power
plant displacing 212 cubic inches with 75 horsepower, a very respectable
output for that time.
The windshield can he folded flat for wind -in -the -face driving or
pushed out at the bottom for extra ventilation.
