Province chooses St. James as `lighthouse' school
From Page 11
McClure got a visit from then -
Deputy -Reeve Bill Siemon asking
her to put forth her name as coun-
cillor but she turned him down. And
now, after serving McKillop for 12
years and Huron East for six more,
McClure has decided to retire from
municipal politics and will not be
running in this fall's election.
Because of its high achievement
in both literacy and numeracy in
EQAO testing, St. James School in
Seaforth has been chosen as a
"school on the move" by the
province. "You guys are doing
extremely well on the student
achievement front," St. James staff,
students and parents were told by
Education. Minister Sandra
Pupatello as she visited the school
last Friday.
As he and his wife Anne sell their
McKillop farm and settle into a new
home in Seaforth, Ferg Kelly is also
stepping down from political life
after 12 years as a Huron East
councillor.
Whether it's their way of battling
back against cancer in their fami-
lies or whether Terry Fox is a per-
sonal idol, a core of close to 60
Seaforth-area residents have been
participating in the annual Terry
Fox Run for 25 years this year.
Seaforth was handed a full bou-
quet of five blooms and finished in
the top three of its category at the
Communities in Bloom competition
in Brandon, Manitoba over the
weekend. Competing in the national
Canadian Classic category part-
nered with Petrolia, Ont., the two
lost to Kelowna, B.C., population
100,000, which was partnered with
Summerland, population, 10,000.
Unwilling to invest in a project
that will increase the number of
beef processing plants when exist-
ing plants are not working to capac-
ity, CanAdvance has turned down a
request for funding from the pro-
posed Brussels beef plant. But, the
Brussels, beef plant steering com-
mittee has not given up, Huron
East Mayor Joe Seili told council at
its Sept. 19 meeting.
