National Women's
Hockey League
coming to

Some of Canada's elite women's hockey players will be
on display at the Mitchell arena this Saturday (Jan. 6),
when Mitchell Minor Hockey presents a regular season
game of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).
Becky Belfour, a director with Mitchell Minor Sports
who spearheaded the event, says the game is a great
way to promote Mitchell and bring together the commu-
nity.
"I really hope it's a success. It's great hockey to see,"
says Belfour. "I hope everyone comes out to see what it's
all about."
Belfour was in contact with the NWHL last season,
when the league donated tickets for the NWHL finals to
Mitchell Minor Hockey, to give away last season. From
those conversations, Belfour inquired about Mitchell
possibly hosting a regular season game.
"I just stayed on their case (about it), because I think
this iS-pretty exciting for them to come to a small town,"
she adds.
The game will take place at 2:30 p.m., followed by an
autograph session.
The game, between the Mississauga Aeros and the
Etobicoke Dolphins, will feature three members of Team
Canada's 2005 Olympic gold medal team, including
goaltender Sami Jo Small, defenceman Cheryl Pounder
and forward Jen Botterill, as well as U.S. Olympic team
captain Krissy Wendell.
To host the game, Mitchell Minor Hockey had to bud-
get $5,000, which will cover the costs of busing the play-
ers and referees to Mitchell, food for the players and
refs before and after the game, as well as advertising
the event on the radio.
Tickets cost $10 and children under three get in for.
free.
"I know it's a bad time of the year with Christmas just
finished, but it's a perfect opportunity for a small town
to take advantage of something you don't get to see
every day," she says.
"Even if we break even, it was worth it."
All proceeds from the game will go tow. rds Mitchell
Minor Hockey, says Belfour, adding that o gra nizers are
expecting to sell at least 500 tickets, which would cover
their costs.
All proceeds afterwards will be put to good use in the
minor hockey system, she adds, noting they are expect-
ing somo. donations to help with the costs as well.
