"It's a huge hand -up for us. We're so excited because this adds a level of sustainability to a charitable organization," says Dyck. "If we were having to raise $85,000 one dollar at a time, we wouldn't be in a position to do this for a number of years," he says. The two-year grant will include ,ez spending $40,000 the first year hir- ing an executive director who can create a business plan and start up the ReStore and oversee fundrais- ing. A ReStore, which raises funds for Habitat for Humanity groups, sells recycled building materials, such as end -of -lot materials from building supply businesses such as Home Depot. Materials can include recycled kitchen cupboards, doors, windows and used appliances and furniture. Dyck says the Huron Habitat group is still determining the best location for a ReStore in Huron County. "Clinton is central but it's not nec- essarily the best customer base. It's too early to speculate where it will be," he says. Dyck says the Stratford Habitat group's first ReStore was located in the small village of Wartburg but the group moved it to Stratford recently. "We're trying to learn from other affiliates- so we don't make the same mistakes," he says. The second year of funding will pay to open up the ReStore. Dyck says that while Huron's Habitat group has only been in operation for one and a half years as. an affiliate, it has built two houses in Clinton and in Wingham - and is set to build again in Hensall in the spring of 2007. "We've gotten verbal pats on the back from the Canadian Habitat organization," he says, adding that Huron is a small affiliate by popula- tion but a large one by geography. Dyck adds that as the ReStore becomes more profitable, Huron's Habitat group will be able to hire a manager for the ReStore. But, until then, the executive director will run the ReStore. As well, he says, volunteers will be sought to work at the ReStore. r1 G ..
