Council is endorsing a Port
Colborne -based resolution
that decries paying any more
downloading of costs for the
Municipal Property
Assessment Corporation
(MPAC).
The independent body,
which has been mandated by
the province to undergo a
two-year assessment freeze,
is seeking an increase in the
fees it collects from ..munici-
palities.
The county currently pays
$100,00 a year to MPAC.
Warden praises
manufacturing awards
Warden Rob Morley (South
Huron) is singing the praises
of the first -annual
Manufacturing Excellence
Awards held in Wingham on
Nov. 22.
At council's Nov. 29 meet-
ing, Morley gave praise to
Volvo, which was crowned as
the Manufacturer of the Year.
Morley also notes his home
municipality took home more
than 50 per cent of the hard-
ware from the 13 awards pre-
sented to manufacturers,
countywide.
Councillor Dorothy Kelly
(Morris-Turnberry) also gave
kudos for the event, which
was sponsored by the county,
and drew a capacity crowd.
"It's like the Emmy awards
of the manufacturing indus-
try," she says.
As an added bonus, $100
will be presented to the
Huron United Way on behalf
of each winner.
Only fine tuning left with
cross-border ambulance
billing, council learns
Huron County is one of the
few to escape the administra-
tive headaches associated
with cross-border ambulance
•
billing.
Warden Rob Morley (South
Huron) reports that, unlike
most counties, Huron has col-
lected most of its outstanding
debts, which is a plus given
the province has given all
regions, only 18 months to set-
tle the issue.
"There's nothing really left
for us to do," says Morley,
noting some fine-tuning that
is left includes negotiations
on sharing an ambulance sta-
tion with Lambton County in
Grand Bend.
Council also learned the
province's pledge to fund
ambulance service on a 50-50
basis is not yet quite met.
Following a question by
Coun. Deb Shewfelt
(Goderich), Coun. Neil
Rintoul (ACW), chairman of'
health, ambulance and social
services, reported the
province is now at about 42
per cent of the 50-50 ratio.

OPP Festive RIDE
program takes -aim
at impaired drivers
This year's Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired
Driving Everywhere) campaign began last week and
will continue until Jan. 2, 2007.
Impaired driving remains the leading criminal
cause of death in Canada.
OPP officers will be out in your neighbourhood in
an effort to remove the threat of the impaired driver,
and reduce the death toll on Ontario roads.
Last year, during the five-week ,initiative, OPP
officers stopped 576,875 vehicles at roadside check-
points and charged 278 people with alcohol-related
offences across the province. Also, a total of 671 12 -
hour licence suspensions were issued.
Officers also issued 270 of the 90 -day
Administrative Drivers Licence Suspensions.
For every 608 vehicles checked at RIDE locations,
one driver was either charged with an impaired dri-
ving related charge or was issued a 12 -hour licence
suspension.
Officers also investigated 37 fatal collisions in
which 45 people lost their lives. Three of these
deaths were alcohol related.
