"I've talked to a couple of businesses, but I don't know if they're going to be doing anything," says Lion's mem- ber Ross Ribey, who was one of the light display's original organizers and is hoping to contact past contributors. "I don't know if it will be expanding," he adds. It's been three years since the Lions Club had a light display in the park, but the decision to stop what was still a relatively new tradition at the time, was not the club's, explains Lion's president Bill Teall. "Originally there was con- cern from the hydro inspector over the number of extension cords we were using. So we went ahead and put in 16 permanent outlet plugs, that are controlled from the pavil- ion with a timer," he explains. The outlets are attached to the trunks of the trees in front of the pavilion that face Highway 8. The decision to add outlets to the park however; was made only after the Seaforth Development Trust announced they would award a grant worth $3,000 to the Lions Club, with plans of res- urrecting the light display specifically in mind. Some of the money has been used to pay local metal work- er Jim Dawe, who, con- tributed display .carolers, Christmas trees and a Santa and sleigh, which can be seen on display. Only the Christmas tree displays currently have lights attached, while the rest of the displays are lit using flood lights. Teall says the outlets are "versatile," since they will also be available for use in the summer. "We have a number of fami- lies that will have a picnic at the park. And you used to have to be in the pavilion for power," he says, noting that now, if it's a small enough group, they could pull a pic- nic table out near an outlet. As for the winter lights dis- play, Teall says they are still hoping for more additions to what is currently on display. "We're hoping it'll grow from here," he adds. Hensall boy, 8, collecting toys for area children with cancer Jennifer Hubbard Travis McLeod wants toys for Christmas. Like many children his age, the eight-year- old son of Hensall's Caleb and Candice McLeod, has a Christmas list of what he'd like to see under the Christmas tree. Chapter books, an art table, Etch -A -Sketch... Christmas favourites for children of all ages. But Travis' wishlist isn't for him- self or even his little sisters Alexis and Kyla. The Grade 3 Hensall Public School student is collecting dona- tions — including Canadian Tire money — to purchase toys for the pediatric cancer unit at the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario in London. "I'm doing a drive for kids who have cancer, because I want to help other kids," he explained. "I'm going to spend the money on toys for kids at the hospital." Travis will be making his donations through Childcan, the Childhood Cancer Research Association. He first began working with the organiza- tion last May, when he held a drink stand fundraiser and donated nearly $150 to the cause. Candice said she chose to make Travis' donation via Childcan, because the organiza- tion receives no government funding. Soon after, Childcan executive director Marianne• Hebb, contacted Travis to thank him for his contribution and invite the family' to London for a visit. "We toured the hospital in August and he got to meet some of the kids. It was really an eye opening experi- ence," Candice commented. "I got to see the blanket warmer that they used my money to buy," Travis proudly added. The drink stand donation also helped to purchase parking passes for the parents of the young oncology patients. "Our family has been touched by cancer, but fortunately never in children," Candice said. "Travis has always been tin emotional, sensitive giving child. We asked him what he wanted for Christmas and he said `Nothing, just to buy toys for other kids.' He makes us so proud." . Donatibns — cheques, money orders (payable to Candice McLeod) or Canadian Tire money — can be mailed to Box 437, Hensall, NOM 1X0. Tax receipts are available for donations over $10, as .long as a full name, address, postal code and phone number are included, Candice added.
