Seaforth water, sewer rates
expected to go up by $4.50

still paying $100 a year until
the end of 2006. The sur-
charge is to eliminate a debt
from the old Egmondville sys-
tem.
In 2005, council moved
$25,000 in Brussels taxation
that was no longer needed for
waste management into rev-
enues for its water system.
Knight said they must
make up that $25,000 in rev-
enue either through
water/sewage rates or a tax
levy.
To cover the $25,000
through water/sewage rates,
Knight suggested their water
rates increase by $4.50 a
month (to $25) and the
sewage rates by $4.73 a
month (to $26.23).
With no room for
upgrades with
Brucefield's current
rates, Knight suggested
Brucefield's water rates
increase from $33.33 a
month to $35.
"I have no problem if
we up it to a buck and a
half a month," noted
Deputy -Mayor Bernie
MacLellan of the
Brucefield water rates.
"Inflation is going to
hit us. So if we up it
now, we might not have
to in 10 years," he
added.
The Vanastra system,
which is completely
metered, based on the
Huron East,
Central Huron
to each add one
more member
to county
council.
Huron East and Central Huron
will each add one new member to
county council in the 2010 term,
thanks to slight increases in their
respective populations.
The changes will also mean each
municipality will have an addition-
al representative on both the cul-
tural services and planning, agri-
cultural and public works commit-
tees.
Some councillors expressed con-
cern that the current population
standard may be too low, and could
lead to a burgeoning county council
like the ones of yore.
"It'll take three days to get
through council," suggests Coun.
Bernie MacLellan (Huron East).
Council plans to further discuss
the issue in the coming term.
To profit or not?
Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich) is
curious to know whether the ongo-
ing Shakespeare to the Shoreline
promotion, designed at bringing
inland Ontarians into Huron
County, is boosting tourism.
Coun. Bert Dykstra (Central
Huron) says there is no benchmark
to gauge its potential success.
"It's a tough one to answer. It's a
a tough one to quantify," says
Dykstra.
Administrator Scott Tousaw " says
the general feeling is a program's
popularity is determined by how
many partners come on board and
the Shakespeare program does
boast many stakeholders.
Council learned the promotional
program is expanding to include a
Taste Trek brochure, focusing on
"food, glorious food," as a seventh -
themed travel route.
By Cheryl Heath
2006 budget will generate a
annual operating deficit of
nearly $30,000, Knight said.
Therefore, he suggested
Vanastra's water rates
increase 12 per cent up to 10
cents per cubic metre.
Vanastra's sewage system is
financed from a tax levy on
Vanastra, currently at
$100,000 a year.
Work estimated at $940,000
on Vanastra's retention tank
is still subject to COMRIF
(Canada Ontario Municipal
Rural Infrastructure Fund)
grant approval.
If . funded, Vanastra's sys-
tem would be in a deficit of
approximately $120,000.
Knight said regulations
require that 21 days be given
before any changes to rates
take place.
He said he would like to
have the rates changed for
Jan. 2.
He also said in the next
couple of weeks they would
be receiving water/sewage
rates from other county
municipalities for compara-
tive purposes.
