While Environment Canada rec- ommends 30 per cent of a water- shed be forested, ABCA ranges from 5.9 per cent south of Exeter to 69 per cent forest cover at the Pinery Provincial Park. In the Bayfield Headwaters sur- rounding Seaforth, the forest cover is seven per cent (earning a D) and in the Main Bayfield watershed, the forest cover is 19.9 per cent (earning a B). The Bayfield Headwaters receive an F in forest interior with only .8 per cent of the area inside a woodlot needed for the breeding of some bird species, when 10 per cent is recom- mended by Environment Canada. The Main Bayfield has 4.4 per cent forest interior (earning a C). Recommendations in the report card to improve forest conditions in the Bayfield Headwaters includes -G reforestation and --z a reestablishing c woodlots on ff farms. "Reforestation is critical in this area, particular- ly in areas with hickory bark bee- tle devastation," says the report card. It adds : that woodlots were removed in Hibbert and Logan Townships to support the railway that runs parallel to Highway 8. The report card gives a thumb's up to local environmental group Friends of the Bayfield River for recognizing the connection between degraded downstream water quality and the lack of forest cover in the headwaters. "This community group has helped private landowners in the headwaters secure grants to plant trees along headwater drains," says the report. P,'e-Ciwiilrnai Sale Starts now... NIFTY((E KORN ERS r 33 Main St. Seaforth 527-1680 In the Main Bayfield watershed, the report card recommends con- necting small woodlots to the main Bayfield River Valley Forest and planting native trees and shrubs around existing woodlots or retiring land near woodlot edges. As well, it recommends investi- gating the costs associated with a Bayfield River Trail from Parr Line to Bayfield. Under water quality, the whole ABCA watershed is shown to have moderate to poor water quality with phosphorous concentrations above Ministry of Environment objectives and extremely variable levels of e - coli bacteria. Both the Bayfield Headwaters and the Main Bayfield watersheds receive a B in phosporous content, C in e -coli content and C in benthic invertebrates, tiny animals without backbones that live in stream or lake sediment. Recommendations to improve water quality include looking for further wetland re-creation oppor- tunities associated with the Seaforth wastewater treatment plant, better manure management practices, the planting of wind- breaks and practice of conservation tillage, fixing faulty septic systems, decomissioning abandoned wells and completing environmental action plans. Other recommendations include protecting cold water tributaries and wetlands, assessing Trick's Creek watershed to identify wet- land and stream restoration pro- jects and investigating rainbow trout distribution and spawning requirements. Veliz says the report card is intended as a tool to promote local action. "Look at where you live in the watershed and how the grades relate to your practices. We're encouraging everyone to make the best environmental decisions they can," she says, adding that there are many conservation programs that can be assessed to improve the situ- ation before the next report card is released in five years.
