Council questions need for
new $5,768 postage machine
Su8an Hundertmark
The need to buy a new dig-
ital $5,768.14 postage
machine when $1,500 is still
owing on a rental agreement
for the present postage meter
is almost enough to make
Huron East council "go
postal."
"Can we send the bill to
Canada Post?" asked
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry
McGrath at council's Nov. 7
meeting.
"What kind of assurance do
we have from Canada Post
that we're not going to have
to buy another new
machine?" asked Deputy-
Mayor Bernie MacLellan.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan told council the
municipality has known since
spring that Canada Post will
no longer accept postage
meters after Dec. 31 that are
not fully compliant with new
high security, digital indicia
and product capture require-
ments.
Because of the timing,
Huron East will have to also
pay $1,500 for the six-month
balance of the present
postage meter's rental agree-
ment.
McLachlan said the present
machine was "state of the art"
when Huron East began leas-
ing it four and a half years
ago.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler
asked what would happen if
Huron East didn't go by
Canada Post's rules.
"Would they not process
your letter?" he asked.
"They're saying no," said
McLachlan.
MacLellan said Canada
Post should have let the pre-
sent machine's agreement
expire before demanding a
new machine and suggested
getting Huron -Bruce MPP
Paul Steckle involved in the
issue.
"But, if we don't order it in
two weeks, we won't have it
in time," said MacLachlan.
Mayor Joe Seili said the
$45.95 monthly meter rental
of the new postage machine
will more than cover the
labour costs that would be
necessary if administration
had to apply stamps to all of
the correspondence.
"I'm not sure you want to
come in here and lick all
those stamps," he said.
• McLachlan said Huron
East mails out approximately
16,000 letters a year.
