Girl broomballers win one at qualifier
Jeff Heuchert
Being only their second
attempt at qualifying for the
Canadian Juvenile Broomball
Championships, the Seaforth
Assassins girls' team was
quite happy to come away
with a win.
"We couldn't have asked for
anything more," said coach
Georgina Reynolds, adding
the team has come a long way
since last season, when the
girls were "blown off the ice,"
at the qualifying tournament.
The Assassins lost their
first game to the Ottawa -area
based Eastern Flames 2-0.
Reynolds said after letting
up two goals quickly into the
game, she was proud how the
girls buckled down and kept
the ball out of the net the rest
of the way.
The Assassins won their
second game 2-0 over another
Ottawa -area based team,
before losing a tight game 1-0
in a rematch with the
Flames.
"We played the whole game
in their end. We just couldn't
score," said Reynolds of their
final game, adding they had
numerous shots bounce off of
the net or hit the goalie.
The two losses placed the
Assassins in fourth place and
eliminated them from quali-
fying for the championships.
However, Reynolds said
some girls are expected to
join some of the Ottawa -area
teams for the championships.
She added that the broom -
ball season is far from over
for the Assassins, and they'll
get back to "the drawing
board" and practising to pre-
pare for the provincials,
which take place in February.
Since this year's team is
made._ up of mostly first-year
players, Reynolds said there's
plenty of reason to be excited
and optimistic as they pre-
pare for the provincials.
"We've really improved and
we keep getting stronger,"
she said.
