Staffs organist fundraising
with CDs and performances
Jeff Heuchert
Amy yingerhoeds is hoping to
spread some holiday cheer this
December, and raise some money
for a good cause and her church
while doing it.
Vingerhoeds, who resides south of
Staffa, will be performing in four
concerts next month along with
Ilderton-area group Ron McRae and
Friends.
They will be performing a number
of classic Christmas songs at
Hibbert United Church, where
Vmgerhoeds has been a member for
the past 12 years and is the organ-
ist, on Dec. 10.
Half of the proceeds will be donat-
ed to the Canadian Cancer Society
for brain cancer research, while the
other half will be donated . to
Hibbert United Church.
Vingerhoeds and McRae met last
winter after he purchased a copy of
a Vingerhoed's CD, which she
recorded last year over three hours
at Deep Waters Music in Mitchell.
The album, entitled My Prelude to
Christmas, features 15 Christmas
'songs played on the piano that
Vmgerhoeds describes as "just calm,
peaceful background music."
And while she says the experience
was a lot of fun and she enjoyed giv-
ing copies to friends and family, her
• main goal was to raise whatever she
could by selling the CDs and donate
the proceeds to

her church.
"With these
small churches
you have to get
creative with
your fundrais-
ing. It's a strug-
gle to keep them
going," she says.
Over the holi-
days last year,
Vingerhoeds
says she sold
around 30-40
copies of her CD,
raising around
$600.
"It's extreme-
ly low budget,
but every little
bit helps. It's
just a fun thing

to do, more than anything. And, it
made my mom happy - all of those
piano lessons were justified," says
Vingerhoeds, who adds that the
money she donated was not for any
specific project at the church, but
rather just went into the church's
general funds.
The recording process provided
Vingerhoeds the opportunity to
stray from playing straight from a
sheet of music, which she joyfully
does each Sunday.
"I like creating my own arrange-
ments. It was a lot of fun to put my
own spin on the music," she says.
Six songs featured on her CD have
her own arrangements, including
Silent Night, 0 Come Emmanuel
and 0 Holy Night.
Having just recently finished an
enjoyable recording process,
Vingerhoeds says she was excited
when she was asked by McRae to
record another Christmas CD with
McRae and Friends.
The CD, entitled Friends Like
These, features 20 Christmas songs,
with a "folky twist to them," she
explains.
McRae and Friends includes near-
ly 20 musicians, most on vocals and
some on instruments.
It was while practising the CD the
idea came up to play some concerts
as a fundraiser towards brain can-
cer research in addition to fundrais-
ing for Hibbert United Church,
since McRae lost ,a brother-in-law to
the disease, says Vingerhoeds.
As for the upcoming performances,
although she's played the piano to a
full church many times before,
Vingerhoeds says nerves might play
a factor since this will be the first
time she's performed with all eyes
on her.
"I'll probably be a little nervous. I
want people to like the music as
much as I do," she says.
Tickets for the concert at Hibbert
United Church are $10 for adults
and $5 for children and can be pur-
chased at the Christian Resource
Centre in Mitchell or by calling
Vingerhoeds at 519-229-8810.'
Both Vmgerhoeds and the McRae
and Friends Cds will also be avail-
able for purchase at the concert.
