Family health team plans
moving forward, LAC told
From Pale l
won't be solved quickly but the commitment
is there to go forward," said Laviolette.
He said that while four local doctors have
agreed to join the FHT and six allied health-
care professionals are ready to be hired, fund-
ing has not yet been received from the
province to do so.

"We got the okay to
recruit in August but they
haven't given us any bucks
to recruit yet," he said,
adding that the FHT has
received $11,000 that has
gone towards advertising
and installing phone lines.
Describing the number
of orphan patients in
Huron County as a num-
ber that "bounces around
a bit," Laviolette said he's
heard as many as 12,000
to 20,000 from people like
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell -to as little as
3,000.
"We're estimating 7,000
based on the number of
doctors who have left here
and the patients orphaned
by that," he said.
Laviolette said the
ideal setting has been
identified by the doctors as "where they oper-
ate now" at the clinic.
"We're hoping an architect can make the
plans and build sometime in the spring," he
said, adding the FHT has commitment from
the hospital foundation and the Seaforth
Community Development Trust for bricks and
mortar.
When asked about the Health Ministry's
commitment, Laviolette said he thought the
province is as committed to FHTs as it is to
any other facility where doctors operate.
"I don't think it's likely to go away. This is
the future of healthcare," he said.
Alliance CEO Andrew Williams added his
congratulations to Burgess's words of com-
mendation, adding he hoped the FHT would
work cooperatively with existing healthcare
facilities.
"I want to reinforce how important it is to
strengthen through partnership. We need to
build on what we have and use it appropriate-
ly," he said.
Williams added that he hoped recruitment
of healthcare professionals could be done in a
"coordinated fashion."
"We should have one voice as we're
approaching people," he said.
