ockey mom scores award for service to sports

While she's been a hockey mom since
her two oldest children - now in univer-
sity - were four or five, Liz Scott has
only been on the bench for three years.
But, this year's winner of the
Seaforth Citizenship award for Service
to Sports is enjoying every moment of
her time as trainer of two Seaforth
girls' hockey teams.
"I know Liz spends many hours of
her week at the arena not only training
her daughter's hockey team but also
watching her son play: She goes above
and beyond her duty to do her trainer's
job and do it well," says the nominating
letter.
"I love the kids. It's a fun age Where
their personalities are starting ta
emerge and they're becoming aware of
the world outside themselves," says
Scott.
As trainer, her job is to "look after
the boo-boos," something she needs to
be certified to do each year with sever-
al levels of first aid training.
"Of course, it scares you out of your
wits, some of the injuries they talk
about like broken necks," says Scott.
"Anyone can get hurt but I haven't had
too many injuries.
There have been a lot
of tears, though."
• Scott says she tries
to explain to the girls
what is happening to
their bodies in scien-
tific terms when they
get hurt.
"A lot of them are
very surprised that it
hurts. It's such a
shock to get hurt
when you're having so
much fun," she says.
She says the occa-
sional bump and
bruise helps build
empathy and sports-
manship among the
girls since they begin
to understand how
they can also hurt oth-
ers.
• Her job also involves
making sure the play-
ers have the proper
equipment and water
but she also adds the
special touch of giving
out "small tokens" at
Christmas, Valentine's
Day and before the
team headed to
Mississauga for the
provincials.
"Liz makes count-
less phone calls mak-
ing sure each girl
knows about every
practice and game.
She is very organized
and truly cares about
each girl on those
teams," says the nomi-
nating letter.
Hockey is a family sport for the
Scotts since Denny, 21, still plays
houseleague hockey in university ,at
Laurier in Brantford, Tory, 19, played
throughout high school and her two
youngest Ethan and Marissa, both 11,
are still playing minor hockey.
While she got involved because of her
kids' involvement, Scott says she's
there for all the girls:
"I'm there because I like the kids and
I like to see kids involved in sports.
What is that saying? Keep a kid in
sports and they'll be out of the courts,"
she says.
Scott says she's also thrilled to see
how hockey builds self-esteem in girls.
"You see a kid get a goal or stop 4
goal and the smile goes from ear to
ear," she says.
Scott has also joined the minor -hock-
ey executive this year.
"I wanted to be more involved. I'd
rather be on it (the executive) than sit
back and criticize," she says.
She adds that she's surprised and
honoured to win the Service to Sports
award.
"There are others who deserve it far
more," she says.
