Whether it's helping an elderly
friend make her way to town events
or getting a cup of tea for a patient
at Seaforth Community Hospital,
Joyce Ribey says she likes to do the
simple things that make life a little
more pleasant.
"I like being arourid people. There
are so many terrific people around
and it enriches life to get to know
them," says this .year's winner of
the Seaforth Citizenship award. for
Humanitarian efforts.
Ribey, who's worked ` at the
Seaforth hospital for 29 years as a
unit clerk, spends her days working
at the nurses' station and interact-
ing with patients.
And, while looking after people is
part of her job, Ribey does it in a
"very caring way" and "is always
willing to give of her time," says her
nominating letter.
Ribey is "thoughtful, kind, a great
friend, neighbour and co-worker
and always goes out of her way to
have patients as comfortable as
they can be," says the letter.
Helping out with the patients in
the hospital, Ribey says she's
noticed over the years that doing
the "simplest thing" for someone
can improve their day.
"Sometimes just a simple cup of
tea can make someone's day. It's
tough being in the hospital and you
do what you can to make it all the
more comfortable," she says.

or making a phone call for a patient
can also ease the strain of being
sick.
While she belonged to the
Seaforth Hospital Auxiliary as a
young mother, Ribey is no longer a
member but she still helps out with
hospital fundraising when she can,
volunteering for this year's kick-off
for the CKNX radiothon at the
Blyth Festival and manning phone
lines at the Legion during the radio-
thon event in October.
"I was so proud of the silent auc-

it phenomenal,"
she says.
As well, Ribey

"There again, it's just picking up
more friends. It's a whole new group
of people you get to know," she says.
Ribey is also an active grand-
mother, enjoying the company of
her two granddaughters as often as
possible.
"I always thought I was blessed
with kids but I'm doubly blessed
with grandchildren. They are the
joy of our lives and with everything
we do, we're making memories," she
says.
