Horticultural members learn
about birds at annual meeting
The annual meeting of
the Seaforth and District
Horticultural Society met
Nov. 8 in Northside
United Church at 6 p.m.
Seventy-four people sat
down to a catered turkey
dinner Rev. Horst said
Grace and Brad Knight
and Bob Fisher were our
special guests.
Brad wanted to speak to
us about "Communities in
Bloom" but could not stay
so will call a meeting later
in the town hall.
Eleanor Horst intro-
duced speaker Tom
Dunbar from the Riverline
Store in Goderich. It is a
bird store and has been
there for
seven
years.
He goes
all over to
clean up oil spills and uses
Dawn.
Birds need three things
- food, shelter and water.
Access to water is very
important because they
use it to preen and clean
their feathers.
Be sure and clean bird-
houses every year and
spray with Javex to kill
the parasites.
For food, use black oil
sunflower seeds but be
aware.. that some blends
have a lot of filler. Niger

seed is
good but
very
expen-
sive -
never buy it from an open
bin because it takes on
moisture and will mold
and the birds will not eat
it.
Suet is good mixed with
peanut butter. Cardinals
and Morning Doves will
fill their crops and go
somewhere else to eat.
Beatrice Stoll read the
minutes of the October
meeting and a thank you
note from Melissa
Sparling who was our
ambassador of the fair
and won.
Dilys Finnigan gave the
treasurer's report and
,Kevin Kale had audited
her books and would not
take payment but suggest-
ed we give it to the Peace
Garden.
Cory Klaver had
attended a meeting in
Goderich Oct. 28 and gave
a report. The spring meet-
ing _ is March 24 in
Kincardine. District #8 is
hosting it.
Eleanor introduced our
incoming President
Margaret DeJong. The
meeting was adjourned.
