Locals help .bring competitive edge to CHSS swim team
Jeff Heuchert
With the addition of
several Grade 9 and 10
students from
Seaforth, the Central
Huron Secondary
School swim team has
entered the new season
with better numbers
and more optimism
than•usual.
Now coaching the
team for the second
season, Scott
Middleton said he was
quite surprised to see
the team's membership
jump up to 21 swim-
mers this year, when
they had only eight all
of last year.
"I was going to be
happy with 10 or 12,"
said Middleton in a
recent phone interview.
"But this is more than
double and they're
mostly Grade 9s and
10s, so it means we're
growing in numbers,"
hopefully for the long
term, he added.
"With that many
kids, even if some drop
out along the way,
those that stay will be
more competitive
(down the road)," noted
Middleton.
"And, they're mostly
from Seaforth. Looking
at' the player list,
there's a lot of 527
(phone) numbers."
Because so many of
his swimmers are new
to the team this" sea -

son, Middleton refers
to it as a "building
year," but added since
the team has so many
more swimmers, he
expects to see
better results at
this year's meets
when it comes to
overall team
points.
Middleton
pointed out that
some of this
year's new swim-
mers trained
over the summer
with the
Seaforth Sea
Lions swim team
and CHSS team-
mate Matt
Fisher, of
Seaforth, who
helped coached
the Sea Lions.
"A . lot of the
skills they have,
like proper tech-
nique with
strokes, we
taught them (in
the summer)," noted
Fisher, adding that for
those on this year's
CHSS team that didn't
swim with the Sea
Lions, some took swim-
ming lessons over the
summer.
