Family health team in Seaforth
should be running by Christmas
Laviolette urges local orphans to register for care
from four doctors and six professionals on team
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Seaforth's family health
team (FHT) should be up and
running by Christmas, says
organizer Ralph Laviolette.
As he prepares to begin a
series of community meetings
at the end of November, both
to focus groups and to the
public at large, Laviolette
says he is still awaiting final
provincial approval for both
the FHT's formation of a non-
profit corporation and a new
physicians' association that
will work with the FHT in
Seaforth.
"By December, things will
be nicely squared away.
Everybody is very supportive
and keen to get it underway,"
says Laviolette, secretary of
the ad hoc committee orga-
nizing the `FHT for Seaforth.
Designed to provide prima-
ry healthcare for anyone
within a 60 -mile radius of
Seaforth and Brussels, the
Huron Family Health Team
in Seaforth will
begin with
four family"
doctors and six
allied health-
care profes-
sionals, includ-
ing a nurse
practitioner,
social worker,
nurse, psychol-
ogist, pharma-
cist and dieti-
cian.
While no
provincial
funding is
forthcoming

Laviolette says an architect
is lined up to begin designs
on the clinic, which needs to
house all of the allied health
professionals and provide
room to see patients all on
one level
and go and this
is an answer.
You won't be
orphaned if
you tie in with
a FHT,' -

tory therapist or hos-
pice worker, the FHT
will be referring to
both.
"There's no question
it's going to grow,"
says Laviolette. "We
are funded for 3,000 to
5,000 orphans and I
suspect there's many
more out there than
that."
.He adds that the 60 -
mile radius will
include patients as far
away as London or
Kincardine.
While two FHTs were
initially announced for
Huron County -
Seaforth and Goderich
- there have since been
others created includ-
ing FHTs in Wingham,
Bluewater, Clinton
and Grand Bend.
Perth County also has
two FHTs in Stratford
and one in Listowel.
While temporary
offices will be set up on
Seaforth's Main Street
at the Healthkick
office, Laviolette says
the preferred location
for the FHT is the
Seaforth / Medical
Centre, which needs
an estimated 3,000 to
5,000 square foot
expansion.
An executive
director and
administrative
assistant must
also be hired to
run the FHT and
the board of direc-
tors must choose
an executive.
"There is lots
of room for com-
munity involve-
ment,." says
Laviolette.
While roster-
ing has been hap-
pening since the-
) b
he-
}b ginning of
August, Laviolette
says about 200 orphan
patients have been seen by
the nurse practitioner since
then.
"People have not been reg-
istering as enthusiastically
as I thought they would," he
says.
Laviolette says anyone who
registers with the FHT will
get an appointment for a gen-
eral physical and will see one
of the four involved doctors,
along with the allied health-
care professionals.
"People are still saying,
'Will I see a doctor?' but this
is a different way to see one,"
he says, adding that it's pos-
sible that someone's health-
care needs might not need to
involve a doctor but a dieti-
cian for a change in diet or a
social worker for some coun-
selling.
"A nurse practitioner.
almost is a doctor and she
can prescribe 20 common
medications," he adds.
"Doctors come and go and
this is an answer. You won't
be orphaned if you tie in with
a FHT," he says.
Laviolette says he is wel-
come to speak to local service
groups or church groups
about the Seaforth FHT and
will soon be planning more
public meetings on the FHT's
development.
