Sunday deer hunthii'lPIv
ermitted in Huron East
Jeff Heuchert
Hunters in Perth and
Huron Counties will have two
weeks this season to get out
during the controlled deer
hunt.
Both counties will have
controlled deer hunts for one
week, Dec. 4-10., while in.
Huron County there is an
extra week, which ends Nov.
12.
Bill Murch, information offi-
cer with the Ministr of
Natural Resources .says
hunters are restricted to only
using shotguns and muzzle
loading rifles in both coun-
ties.
Murch says because much
of the hunting in the area is
done on private property,
where land owners have per-
mitted hunting, by allowing
only shotguns and muzzle
loading rifles, they're limiting
the possible damage that can
occur on the property.
"These properties have a
human presence and agricul-
tural presence," he says,
adding, "$lack powder is
essentially a single shot, so it
makes the hunter take that

much more time (before fir-
ing) because they only have
one shot, as opposed to a rifle
that can fire off a bunch at
once."
He adds that shotguns,
some of which can fire more
than one shot without reload-
ing, tend not to fire far
enough to cause any exten-
sive damage to the land.
As for determining which
weeks the Ministry allows
controlled deer hunts, he says
it is determined by the deer
population in an specific area
and how much hunting that
wild management unit can
safely sustain.
There is also an archery
hunting season which runs
from Oct. 1 Dec. 31
However, notes Murch, there
is no archery hunting permit-
ted during the controlled deer
hunt Dec. 4-10 in either coun-
ties.
Also, notes Murch, several
municipalities in Ontario, for
the first time, are allowing
Sunday deer hunting,
including Huron East,
Bluewater and South
Huron.
He says for certain

municipalities, where they
might have problems with too
many deer at this point in the
season, opening up Sundays
for hunters is a good idea.
And, the same as last year,
hunters in certain parts of
the province will be able to
purchase additional deer
tags, says Murch, but they
are no longer available at
Ministry of Natural
Resources office in Clinton.
The nearest location for
hunters is the government
information office in
Stratford.
Murch adds that there
could be more changes that
have to do with hunting in
different parts of the
province, and that every
hunter should have the latest
copy of the 2006 hunting reg-
ulations. They can also get
