Environmental incentives
workshop coming to Brussels
New approaches far envi-
ronmental incentive pro-
grams on the farm and
rural properties will be the
focus of a workshop called
Valuing Nature and Your
Land at the Brussels
arena on Nov 23 at 10 a.m.
Is it time for a change to
on-farm environment
incentive programs?
Should landowners be paid
for providing environmen-
tal goods and services?
These kinds of questions
will be explored by speak-
ers looking at a steward-
ship model that may poten-
tially provide landowners
with annual payments for
land that is providing envi-
ronmental goods and ser-
vices.
The workshop will help
local landowners learn
more about a federal pilot
project paying rural
landowners for providing
environmental goods and
services and explore the
possibility of designing a
project in the area.
Discussions will include
what is meant by "environ-
mental goods and services,"
the benefits and challenges
of the model and whether
or not paying landowners
for providing environmen-
tal services would work in
this area.
Speakers include Ian
Campbell, economist with
Agriculture Canada who.
will review the federal gov-
ernment's policy options for
future agro-environmental
programming.
Bob Bailey, Delta
Waterfowl, will outline
what environmental goods
and services mean and why
an incentive program is
needed to move forward.
Dave Reid, Norfolk
Stewardship Council will
talk about the Alternative
Land Use Services pilot
project underway in
Norfolk County.
Bryan Gilvesy, Norfolk
cattle farmer, will offer the
perspective of a farmer
participating in a `payment
for environmental services'
pilot program.
John Fitzgibbon,
University of Guelph will
present the Ontario Farm
Environmental Council's
perspective on environmen-
tal goods and services.
