HPHA's . four hospitals, and numerous others across the province, are awaiting further details on last month's emergency room funding boost. According to a press release issued by Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, Clinton Public Hospital will receive $169,600 and Seaforth Community Hospital will receive $131,800. Heading the list of emergency department challenges are physician and nurse availability and overcrowding as a result of limited acute care bed capacity, Williams explained. "We will also be assessing whether or not we qualify to respond to a call for additional intensive care beds," he commented. The three-point, $142.4 million Emergency Department Action Plan was announced on Oct. 27. Added together, the announcement equals $518,500 in funding for the Alliance. Williams said the funding announcement is a step towards the ultimate goal of creating 24-7 emergency departments. Also on Oct. 27, $330,989 in funding was approved for the HPHA diabetes program. Williams said the Alliance's Stratford site will act as a "paymaster" dispersing the funds — $311,739 of which is new base funding and $19,250 in one-time funding — for hospitals in Huron and Perth counties. "All eight hospitals have diabetes education and support programs, so the funds will be allocated accordingly," he explained. A third funding announcement of $700,000, will see HPHA as the host organization of one of the province's three new Regional Infection Control Network sites. Williams said HPHA representatives would be participating in discussions with the regional infection control steering committee in December to finalize plans and create a local implementation schedule. "We're working to establish a resource that the entire southwest can access," he explained. An additional $169,090 will be allocated to HPHA through the Ontario, Nursing Strategy Initiative, "This funding gives nursing staff an opportunity to be creative in designing a role that can support new graduates and, hopefully, encourage our senior nurses to remain in nursing a little longer," said chief nursing executive Donnalene Tuer-Hodes in her report to the board. "Over the next month, final decisions will be made regarding job descriptions for these new role(s) and meeting wit the ONA (Ontario Nurses' Association) union." "We'll need to be creative," Williams added. "To offer full-time. employment we will likely have to share hours across multiple employers." Approval to commence the `early works' phase of the Stratford site redevelopment — including a new southeast parking lot — was also received last month. Weather permitting, Williams expected construction to begin soon, with a hiatus over the winter months.
