Junior Curling Club planning
November bonspiel in Seaforth
Jeff H e u c h e r t membership has grown noting that hopefully by com-
because not all kids, and not peting against area curlers at
all parents, want to get- ` their own rink, the Seaforth
involved with the more popu- curlers will become more con -
lar winter sports like hockey fident and better suited for
and figure skating. when they travel themselves.
"This is just one more win- She adds they are hoping to
ter program they can do have enough curlers to fill
instead," he says, adding that three draws.
Hoping to pick up where
they left off last April, the
Seaforth junior curling club
hit the ice last night (Nov.7)
for their first meet of the sea-
son.
This year the club has
drawn 30 members so far,
says coach Dianna Steep,
which she points 'out is
already an' improvement over
last season when they had
around 24 members.
"The majority has
returned," fiotes Steep, who
adds it is great their club has
continued to grow in numbers
over the past several seasons.
"For a while we were losing
(members), but the last cou-
ple of years we've been going
up," she says.
Steep is coaching the
curlers this season along with
Connie Trotter, Todd Doig,
Eric Janes and Kim Hill.
Steep says she believes the
registering a child for the
club only costs $80 for the
entire year.
For the first-time under the
current coaching staff, the
Seaforth club will be holding
at bonspiel open to area clubs
Nov 26
Steep says the coaching
staff wanted to wait .until
they had all been around a
few years and were comfort-
able before holding a bon -
spiel, adding they are in the
process of sending out letters
to thedifferent clubs.
"We thought we'd give it
(holding a bonspiel) a shot,"
she says. "It's more experi-
ence for the kids," she adds,
Steep says they also plan on
attending the provincial ele-
mentary school bonspiel
again, which is being held in
Saugeen Shores in March.
She adds there are around
three or four more bonspiels
available for Seaforth curlers
to enter, if they chose to.
"It's up to each kid to make
up a team," she says.
