eaforth Snipers lose only two at
World = roomball Championships
Jeff .leucbert
Heading in against 19 of
the world's best teams, they
knew it wouldn't be easy.
But, : the Seaforth Snipers
men's broomball team came
away from the 2006 World
Broomball Championships
with a more -than -satisfying
fifth place finish.
"It was a lot of fun," said
Sniper's captain Matt
Shortreed upon returning.
"It was a great learning
experience. We knew there
was a lot better competition
out there," he ' added.
"Some of thecompetition
was pretty similar to what
we've played. The
Australian teams are a little
bit weaker, but the U.S.
teams are comparable."
Members of the Snipers,
which included some play-
ers from other teams in the
local men's broomball league
since some of the regular
players couldn't make the
trip to Blaine, Minnesota,
packed up their equipment
and started the nearly 14 -
hour drive south of the bor-
der last Sunday afternoon
(Oct. 29)._
"We arrived around 5:30 in
the morning Monday, got a
couple hours of sleep and
Monday afternoonwe were
playing two exhibition
games," said Shortreed.
The next day, the Snipers
started the tournament play
with three games, tying the
Lethbridge Panthers 0-0,
losing to Life Chiro, from
the U.S. 2-0 and defeating
one of two teams from
Australia 5-2.
The Snipers opened Day 2
of the tournament against
the home favourite
Minnesota Hitmen - which
would turn out to be one of
the most memorable
moments of the tournament
said Shortreed.
"It was 0-0 and we scored
with 30 seconds left in the
game, and they had the
whole stands filled with
their fans," he added, noting
they finished off the day
with a 3-0 win over the
Golden Boys, from
Palmerston.
On the latot day of division
play, the Snipers started
quickly with a 4-0 win over
the 8th Liners, from Canada
and didn't let up, defeating
the Selkirk Hawks, also
from Canada 2-0.
Shortreed said the
Sniper's 5-1-1 division
record was good for second
place, qualifying them for
the elimination round,
where they faced off against
perennial favourites and
defending champs, the
Ottawa Nationals.
The Snipers were elimi-
nated after a hard fought 3-
0 loss.
"We played them really
strong all game," recalled
Shortreed. "They just had a
little bit more experience."
"We had four or five scor-
ing chances we just couldn't
connect with," he added.
