Susan Hundertmark. 1111111111EENIM Rising water rates and upgrades to Seaforth's water system were uppermost on ratepayers' minds at the Seaforth all -candidates' meeting last Wednesday night. But, while ratepayers wanted to •know how much more they'd be spending on water, neither the acclaimed Seaforth councillors nor the two mayoralty candidates could answer the question. "We can't get an estimate from the engineers because the govern- ment keeps changing the rules," said Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler, adding that with the new provincial Clean Water Act, necessary changes will be expensive. "Water protection is going to kill rural Ontario and every little town. There will have to be 300 metres of protection. around every well and that's going to be expensive," he said, guessing that the current $22 a month for water could possible double. Huron East Mayor Joe Seili said he wants to see water rates rising slowly by $1 to $1.50 a month each year to build a reserve for the time the costs are worked out. "I'd rather be proactive than reac- tive. And, I'd rather see gentle increases. The reserve will be a bet- ter cushion for the seniors," he said. Mayoralty candidate Lou Maloney said he's glad council decided to go with a new well for Seaforth at a possible cost or $2 or $3 million, rather than joining the Lake Huron pipeline project which was estimat- ed to cost $30 million. The mayoralty candidates were asked about their visions of Huron East in four years' time. Maloney said he wants to see the five wards of Huron East getting along better as well as more indus- try. "I want to see Huron East be a better place," said Maloney. Seili said his vision of Huron East in four years is an even stronger leader in Huron County. "We made great strides in the past three years and we're envied by the County of Huron. My vision is to make us even stronger," said Seili. "I want to see Huron East as the number one part of Huron County and the number one part of Ontario," he said. Seili said he wants to see the industrial land Huron East recently bought near Sun North in Seaforth serviced along the railway tracks. "I don't want that land to just sit there and hope that someone comes along," he said. As well„peili said he wants to see Huro4ttift attract more agricultur- al manufacturing and processing plants. Maloney said he doesn't blame the people of Harpurhey for being upset that the compost facility is remain- ing at its current location and See MAYORALTY, Page 13 • 1
