Bobby Mair, of Seaforth,
pursuing career in comedy
Susan
Hundertmark
Bobby Mair says he
wasn't a class clown
while growing up in
Seaforth.
But, the 20 -year-old
stand-up comic
admits he was "just a
goof who got in trou-
ble a lot."
Featured in the
upcoming The Funny
HaHa Show! at
Rockwater Brew and
BBQ at the Galleria
-Mall in London on
Nov. 23 at 8:30 p.m.,
Mair is hoping for a
big Huron County
contingent in the
audience.
And, he says his
friends from high
school are not sur-
prised he's pursuing a
career in comedy.
"It's been a natural
progression and it
makes sense to my
friends. Some people
are good at auto
mechanics and I'm
good at being a
(screw) -up," he says.
Moving to Seaforth
while in Grade 6,
Mair attended
Seaforth Public
School and Seaforth
District High School
until it closed ` and
then attended Central
Huron Secondary
School, graduatingrinf
2004.
"Comedy's always
been a natural defence
mechanism for me," he
says, adding 'that he's
wanted to try stand-up
since he was 12 or 13
and watching shows
like Comedy Now and
Just for Laughs on
television.
"It's an outlet to
smooth things over
and to get through
problems and to get
through life."
Mair says his come-
dy is "just about my
life" and "a little dark,"
adding that his
favourite comedians
include Woody Allen,
George Carlin and
Richard Pryor.

of Seaforth, will be performing his stand-up act at the Funny
at Rockwater Brew and BBQ in London on
about being adopted -
"My mom didn't have
enough money to raise
me and buy smokes" -
and visiting Toronto
strip clubs looking for
his biological mother.
Because a good
friend and his adoptive
mom both died recent-.
ly of cancer, his act
also deals with issues
of cancer and religion.
"Since it's always on
your mind, you talk
about it," he says,
adding that comedy
was helpful for himself
and his family when
his mom Ruth was ill
and fighting cancer.
And, he says his dad
Matt is one of his
biggest fans and never
shocked by the materi-
al.
"That's how I like it.
I like it being really
personal or it's not
going to touch people,"
he says.
He attended Humber
College's Comedy
Writing and
Performance program
but quit after the first
year to focus on getting
as much time on stage
throughout the Toronto
area as possible.
"Humber was a good
way to move to Thronto
- it made the move less
scary - but I was pretty
focussed on stand-up
already and knew I
wanted to do it," he
says.
After attending a few
open-mic nights at
some Toronto bars, he
finally worked up the
nerve to get up on
stage and is now work -
