If elected mayor, Lou Maloney
will be driving around Grey ward
with a "prominent citizen," looking
at "the things that have been over-
looked in Grey," he told ratepayers
at an all -candidates meeting in
Cranbrook last Tuesday.
Maloney was on the offensive in
Grey, telling residents that he
decided to run for mayor the day a
delegation from Grey came to
Huron East council to discuss dea-
malgamation and "were treated
very rude."
"They were told they better get
used to it by the mayor because he'd
be around for another four years.
And, that's when I decided to run,"
said Maloney, currently a Seaforth
councillor.
Mayor Joe Seili responded that he
told the Grey delegation he would
give them time to speak at the
council meeting because they had

issue of deamalgamation. Seili also cautioned ratepayers
that he would not make promises he
couldn't keep, pointing out that the
province will be giving Huron East
$94,000 less in funding next year
with recent changes to municipal
funding.
Maloney also expressed concern
about the state of the Grey fire hall.
"Grey's fire hall is a disgrace.
When they meet, the firefighters
have to sit on the back of the
firetruck," he said.
Seili said a building study that
Huron East is currently compiling
will include the Grey fire hall and
give a complete picture of the work
that needs to be done there.
"I want to look at the whole build-
ing so we're not shooting in the
dark. I know the doors need to be
repaired but its heat bill is bigger
than mine to heat my 40 by 70 foot
shop," he said, adding that the sep-

Seili also said that while the fire
hall does not include a meeting hall,
a community hall is located 10 feet
away that firefighters could possi-
bly use for awhile.
He added that Grey's fire depart-
ment got a new pumper three years
ago as part of the municipality's
plan to keep replacing out-of-date
equipment.
Both mayoralty candidates
repeated their positions on the pro-
posed Brussels beef plant, Maloney
saying the plan ought to be shelved
because the federal government
won't put any more money into it
and Seili disagreeing.
"To put it on the shelf would be a
total waste of taxpayers' money,"
Seili said. "We have got to be pre-
pared to spend money to get indus-
try."
Seili pointed out that Woodstock
spent millions trying to woo the
Toyota plant
that eventually
located there.
"We spent
$25,000 and
now we've got

goes ahead. I'm

mittee, some of
whom are farm-
ers from Grey,"
he said.
